My oldest was a foundation kid. It turned out to be the best thing that happened to him. The prep year made a huge difference when he got to Navy. Graduated at the top of his class and is now finishing flight school. Take the foundation scholarship and dont look back.

Foundation is a great route to USNA as NavyHoops stated. My DS did a foundation year and I feel it made a huge difference. The stats on the success of Foundation kids at the Academy are very strong. We are also from NY . Happy to answer any questions you may have.

DS has ATT and it works fine. Only issue is where in Bancroft they live. Certain sections get very little service regardless of carrier.

Watches and Sunglasses are very popular items among my sons friends . My plebe asked for a running watch and a nice watch to wear while in uniform. He also asked for a few pairs of Sunglasses as gifts. They issue plebe's printers during Plebe Summer so no need for that.
