    Scholarship Question

The scholarship check should be made out to US Treasury and should say it is for CXC John Doe. The check should be mailed to Cadet Pay. I have the exact address and phone number if you want to privately contact me. They will deposit the check amount into your child's monthly pay.

    Diversity/Minority Question

First, let me say that you can be blue eyed and blonde haired and be an American Indian. Visit almost any tribe and you will see it. Second, while USAFA does not require any documentation to claim American Indian status, a tribe and the government does. My husband's tribe requires...

    Awards Ceremony Major Snafu

Dear Supergirl: I have been through the scenario that you describe. My son received his appointment and at the Awards ceremony, the ALO did not show. He did not receive any recognition at all. In a funny turn of events, DS unexpectedly received the Marine Corp Student/Athlete award...

    Snowboard or Skis

I am a ski instructor and my son, who is a 3 degree, is a certified snowboard instructor. He also skis and does park and pipe. In my opinion, most young, athletic people can have immediate success skiing with instruction. Snowboarding takes a little longer to master and without proper...

    Snowboarding?

My son is a 3 degree and I'm a ski instructor at Breckenridge. Another option to consider, maybe in addition to buying the Liberty Pass or the Colorado Pass, is the Loveland ski pass. The military price is $119 for the season. Loveland stays open longer than the others, is closer, and is...

    USAFA Diversity Visit

The diversity package suggests business casual. However, jeans, athletic tshirts, tennis shoes, letter jackets, etc. are often worn by the diversity candidates. I agree with Raimus. Dress the best that you can and don't sweat it after that!:thumb:

    USAFA Diversity Visit

You will receive a diversity package in the mail that gives you airline info and an itenerary. You will be picked up at the Colorado Springs airport. You should dress business casual but some invitees wear jeans and tshirts. You tour the Academy, listen to some speakers and spend 1 or 2...

"Skies to Conquer" and other books

I have read Absolutely American and Duty First and liked both. I would also recommend Lords of Discipline (I couldn't put it down) and Full Dress and Dress Gray (same author). My library has Skies to Conquer on order and I'm in the number 1 spot if and when it ever arrives. On...

    Printers for USAFA cadets

I recommend that you should get your own. You will likely be getting new roommates at semester and they might not want to share and/or they might not have one.

    Weight Lifting

My son, a non-IC, lifts 6 days a week for about 1.5 hours. He says it is how he relieves stress. He was a very competitive high school football player and wrestler and believes in keeping in excellent shape. He has had very high PFT scores.

    Alcohol usage and monitoring

I don't believe it's "partying", I believe it's STRESS. Some cadets release stress by going to the gym, running, cycling, fishing, etc. Some cadets drink to release stress. Just like in the "real" world.

    A-day schedule

I brought the items my son requested (underwear, watch, school supplies, protein powder, sunglasses, etc.) in a big rolling suitcase and we simply rolled it to his room from the field house parking lot after we ate. I pre-ordered chicken wraps, fresh fruit, and brownies from Chik-fil-a (they...

Get first letter from your Basic?

MOZNICK- The same thing happened to us last year with our son. We were writing at least once a day (many times twice) and had mailed letters before he even left home and in his first letter he said that he was disappointed that he hadn't received any letters!!!!! It broke my heart...

    What do we really need?

I brought my son's sunglasses (non-flashy black Oakleys) to him on Acceptance Day. I'd leave the camera, ipod, and shower shoes at home for now. If it is not on the list, don't bring it. You can always mail the items or deliver them to your cadet on Acceptance Day or Parent's weekend. My...

    Scholarship Question

If the company is willing to make the check out to you, that is the easiest way to handle a scholarship check. If they won't, the check must be made out to the U.S. Treasury and mailed to the Cadet Pay department. Scholarship checks going to USAFA must be non-restrictive. The scholarship...
