    sightseeing around academy

we often stay in the Fishkill residence Inn ...it is not flashy but more of a home without the hotel feel. From there you can head up the Hudson to Hyde Park with the Vanderbilt manson (smaller one of the family) and FDR Library/ Muesum. Culinary Institute is on the way if you are so inclined.

Delayed introduction ( only about 2 years)

Our family came to the forum about two years ago and have had the tactic of reading more than conveying information ( approximately 1 post per month). Some may feel that it is a bit melodramatic in my comments but I assure you the thoughts are sincere. Being brought up an AF pilot's son that did...

    New to the forum

Welcome and good luck in your task...Thank your son for his desire and I hope he acheives his goal. Speaking from experience this forum has been a wonderful tool. Through the wisdom expressed our son has been able to make his way towards becoming an Army officer. As your son goes through the...

    coping with another step closer

We alway's joked that our son was born thirty...given the level of maturity of each attending it is a common thread. Sometimes we do wonder who is the parent. Thank you all for the reassurance that our feelings are shared. As we came into the SA family it has been nice to know that with the...

    coping with another step closer

Our son is a rising Cow and will be signing his commitment in about a week. While we support him wholeheartedly and are very proud, we often wonder if we are the only parents that get the sinking feeling of "one step closer"? The 90 second good bye as with the majority of R day was a very...

Parents Present? Not Present for I-Day?

We attended and while it is your choice, I would encourage you to allow your parents to take part. It is the start of your new life but it is also a means for them to feel the support structure of the Academy and the other parents who are now their "new family". Letting go is hard but was made...

Some "causes" you may want to support

While every parent of a SA cadet has already made a huge contribution (their son or daughter) we have recently become involved in some programs that could use some help. In our time as empty nesters we have acquired more pets, considered foreign adoption and alienated some our closest friends...

    Where has the time gone??

while we are new to the process and only have the first year under our belt, we have learned a lot. Regardless of you being there for R day or seeing them off at the airport there will not be a dry eye around you for some time. The process of playing "where's Waldo/ Wanda" will take up a large...

    Bubble wrap advice

Congrats to the parents and members of the Class of 2013. When our son was preparing for Beast, Just A Mom gave us the advice "bubble wrap him till R day." This weekend a young man headed for the USAFA Class of 2013 was killed in a car accident. Please follow this wisdom. Respectfully, I also...
