yes and no. I was very underweight 6' 2'' and 130lbs so DoDMERB made me get a letter from my doctor stating that I wasn't an anorexic. After that DoDMERB was pleased and I was found medically qualified. So yes they care, but no its not disqualifying.

Also, if possible i would definitely recommend attending a CVW, it is a hugely beneficial experience. I don't know any other way as a candidate you would be able to see the inside of the academy during the academic year.

+1 with Naval Architect... I got no problem with JROTC but if you are visiting or going to a SA/SMC just never bring it up, it will never lead to positive things. Also stick away from the Varsity Jackets as well, they don't care. Im not trying to sound mean, its just what I've witnessed.

Ive sent in my new SAT scores and had the recommendations emailed in, however other than that Im holding off. My new BGO said that since Im a reapp I should do most of my stuff later because they won't even look at me until January

Update on the road to reapplication. My new SAT scores just came in; I received a 710 Math 700 CR (1410), up from 690 Math 650 CR (1340). I also finally achieved the rank Eagle Scout last week.

720 on the reading portion is great, however you should definitely work on brining your math SAT score up to at least 600 or higher.

If you fail you need to take pre calculus instead of calculus, however since your son is in AP Calculus, if he scored sufficiently high enough of the AP test he could just opt out of Calc 1 and get the credits from there.

It also depends on WHO gets the scholarship. Last year my school had two kids get the AROTC scholarship. One kid kept having to hear "oh you're doing this because you couldn't get into college" and the other heard "you are America exemplified"; they were both very good and well deserving...

I had to make a similar choice a few months ago; I decided that if I didn't get into the Naval Academy next year on my re app, I would want finish my degree at military school. Thus, I am now going to VMI instead of my state school.
