Coast Guard naming cutter after father who served heroically in World War II

Great story. I recently re-read EB Sledge With the Old Breed, and the background of Mr. Sutphin, and his apparent lifelong reticence on his experiences just seems to reflect the attitude of so many of that "very much missed" generation.

    Marine Corps; Platoon Leaders Class

In the dark ages one perk of PLC was you received service time for pay purposes, but not retirement. When you were commissioned a 2nd Lt. you could have 3-4 years of service time for increased pay. Not the same for midshipman or NROTC. That was before college costs exploded. Not sure still...

    Bronchitis?

If you have no history of Bronchitis, asthma or breathing problems, very well "may" not be an issue. You can check out older post under "items mistakenly left off dodmerb medical questionnaire" may provide some guidance. Dodmerb can give you directions. Good luck. Contact information for...

Thoughts and prayers to Lt. Lee's family, especially his parents; to all those serving; and their families. From Army Times, and Albany GA, papers. FORT BRAGG, North Carolina -- An 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper was killed in Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated during a...

    Considerig dropping army rotc

Very good points from posters. All understand what it is like to be 18, 19, making a life path decision which is why ROTC has a 1 year honeymoon: letting each get to know the other. Balancing the college experience with AROTC can be challenging. There is no question you are missing out on...

    AROTC Basic Camp (CIET) 2017

I belive reference in the CIET thread to regiments for AROTC refer to the the 9 CIET sessions; and sessions for advanced camp CLC. They have no correlation to the 8 brigades (and their battalions). When DS went to CIET his regiment had cadets from multiple brigades. Note to those who have...

AROTC observations for those waiting to hear and selecting their college

As the 2nd round of AROTC notices come out a few things we have learned from our own experiences; and from good points and suggestions from others. Take them for what they are, a few individualized observations that we pass along in good faith. Good luck to everyone, it is an exciting time! ·...

Youngest U.S. Army officer in history

"Who was the youngest modern age commissioned officer?" Earlier thread started few years ago was interesting read. Discussion in 'Off Topic' started by xchefmike, Apr 7, 2010.

USS Arizona survivor dies, Raymond Haerry age 94

From Army Times: PROVIDENCE, R.I. — One of the last living crew members on the USS Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor has died. Raymond Haerry was 94. His son says Haerry died Sept. 27 in Rhode Island. He was one of six remaining Arizona survivors. Raymond Haerry Jr. told The...

    Army Life?

Just to clarify OP 3rd point, if you are AROTC scholarship your initial service obligation time does not count towards qualifying service time for Post-9/11 GI Bill. But active service time after initial obligation time does count. See 10 U.S.C. 2107(b).

    Sophomore + 4 year scholarship

DCKC88 you are correct (though can also get a 4 year or 3.5 year campus based scholarship). Good suggestions to poster: contact ROO, join AROTC compete for campus based. Though remember not all commissioned officers were scholarship or WP. If OP is 2016 high school graduate entering...

Tougher basic and advanced camps moving forward

DS observations sound much the same. Surprised at how many in his regiment had below average of military fundamentals. Some had never done any land navigation, or had no understanding of squad movements. No regular PT so he and a few squad mates set up their own when not in the field. He is...

    BOOK CLUB

What a great idea for a summer thread. Just finishing "Wild Bill Donovan" (Doug Waller) leader behind OSS. Fought as many opponents in Washington as overseas. Earlier read "Stoic Warrior" (Nancy Sherman; former ethics prof. at USNA.) Good read, type of book can pick up and re-read portions...

    Summer Training 2016

CIET 1st regiment was supposed to begin June 3rd- ending next week. Any one have any information (and/or suggestions, tips) for those cadets going later; and for parents wondering what this years CIET is like, and what type of communication to expect? As always thank you!

3 Fort Hood soldiers dead, 6 missing after truck rolls in swollen creek

My thoughts and prayers have been, and continue to be with all of the nine soldiers lost and their grieving families. Along with USMC Captain Kuss and his young family. As has been said better by those before me, most on this forum are very aware of military deaths, whether in wartime or...
