    USMMA accommodations

sometimes they have rooms available (shared bathrooms/dorm living) in GMATS (graduate student area) as well. Everyone I've talked with has been VERY helpful over the years. Besides, NO ONE can beat the commute, and you get an on-campus parking pass.

    Hurricane Irene

And the stormtracker shows Cat 1 Hurricane Irene walloped NYC. From what it looks like, KP may have gotten the stronger-winds side of the storm. Here's hoping that the Mids are safe (if soggy), and the Mids on the ships farther upriver are as well.

    Hurricane Irene

I am impressed that the Administration, Staff, Regiment and others have worked hard to prepare for weather like Hurricane (or Tropical Storm) Irene's visit to USMMA. They take their charge to watch after these Mids very seriously, whether they are ON campus, traveling to/fro, or onboard ship...

    Restaurant for Parent's Weekend

Wow. all these great places (you guys are making me hungry!... ok, cobra blood and beet juice excepted) We had SUCH great plans for/from our Plebe Candidate. Indoc had been well planned and well executed (meaning, our PC was a bit tired AND sleep deprived). Basically, once we fed the kid, he...

    Plebe privileges

Late to the party. If anyone in BandCo is getting curtailed right now, it's probably just due to getting ready for Parents Weekend... and the large performance that BandCo has. I'm not a Band Dad, and I don't play one on TV ;) However, I was hooked every since the first Beat Retreat. I...

    plebe mail boxes

Your youngster will probably happily email you with the details/or may have already told you what his mailbox number is. If I remember correctly: Candidate John Smith - 2015 United States Merchant Marine Academy (or USMMA if you prefer) Box 123 300 Steamboat Road Great Neck, NY 11024-1634...

    1st phone call

From JD: "Some PCs really appreciate the encouragement" Truer words were never spoken Even as a 1/C, our DS would remind us of what a treat it was when he would look in the teeny tiny glass porthole of his mailbox.... and see .... nothing. :( Ah, the world had just forgotten him. He even...

    Plebe Color Test

Huenemed & vamama/vapop: I look forwarding to hearing what pathways open up for your DSs. They sound like great kids, with great attitudes... can't wait to see what unfolds for them. Know of the JC/CC route, but it's a great opportunity to knock out Chem/Physics/Calc 1&2 (or at least...

    Figuring out their companies

Maroon shirts/4th company. Yay. (hahah, still biased ). A/C-well, yes. Just like in hotel rooms, some A/C units may work better than others. They should fill out work-order request if theirs doesn't work well. That gets the ball OUT of their court (they've reported it). And, somewhere...

    Figuring out their companies

Regarding Company Assignments.... Historically, a list(excel spreadsheet?) is produced and emailed to the Parents Association Presidents. From there, the Presidents generally send them out to the parents of Candidates in their individual associations. I don't know if they still do that or...

    Sunday Phone Call

Sunday: 1st call... (let me hop into the 'way back' machine) <5 mins/seemed like <2 mins. Was wonderful. He was hoarse & croaky. Maybe rattled a bit, but what came through primarily was tenacious determination. Sunday: 2nd call... we waited and waited. Zippo. For some reason, they...

A special "Thank You" to the indoc photographers!

They have always been my heroes. Parents, please enjoy the photos. I love that they get posted. Once indoc is over, you will likely have better(email) communications with your candidates. However, at that time, the pictures end... I had to quit -- cold turkey :)

Indoc Photos / Bands on Arm

White string on belts.... another common observation: They keep track of how much water they've had by tying knots (iirc)

    Picture from the Waterfront

The Mids who volunteer their time and take the pics are absolutely wonderful. I couldn't thank them enough. One Mid took pics during Indoc (when my DS began his journey, as he was smiling , waiting to get shots).. Turns out, his little brother took the bellringing pics.... an probably...

    Figuring out their companies

For Indoc, they split a company into, I think, platoons. For instance, Platoon 401 and Platoon 401 are both part of 4th company. 'All Hail the mighty 4th company !" -- sorry , couldn't resist. :) ... A pointer for finding your boy. When you *DO* spot him, memorize the gals around (look hard...
