NROTC Transfer request- ever denied?

My son received the NROTC scholarship (very grateful) and unfortunately did not get accepted at his first choice. They waitlisted him and wanted him to start with a study abroad program that did not seem like the best fit with ROTC. He moved on and decided on another large out of state public university. He’s been accepted and reached out to the recruiting officer there. The officer responded he didn’t anticipate an issue, but wasn’t sure if they had room.😳 We didn’t realize this could happen. This is a large public university with a generous acceptance rate. We’ve paid the enrollment deposit and housing (maybe prematurely). He submitted the transfer request form and acceptance letter. I imagine we now just wait. Any experience with this? We were naive and didn’t anticipate this hiccup. Appreciate the thoughts!

If the NROTC unit is already full when you request to transfer, then yes, it’ll be denied

This happens every year; unfortunately a consequence at the bigger NROTC popular schools. Are there other NROTC schools he's applied to as a backup?

Thanks for the response. Yes, he does have a few other options thankfully. We were just under the false pretense that schools would be open to the additional candidate. We’ve learned a lot during this process. I’m hoping we hear soon if he does have a spot and then can move on if need be. It’s challenging with the FAFSA issues this year and deposit timelines. I’m confident it will work out how it’s meant to be. Thanks again!

If there is a waitlist for the school that is "full" right now, he might want to request being on the list. This is the time of year where candidates landing spots are in flux. A spot at the unit might come available in a month or so.

Thank you. Good point! Any ideas on when we’ll hear back The university contact didn’t seem to have a handle on it at the moment (makes sense considering your points).

You can reach out to me through PM and I can pass some contact information as to who can help answer your transfer question. I just don't want the person's information out on a public domain.

My son is in a similar situation and wasn't accepted to his first choice school. Unfortunately his 2nd choice school NROTC unit is full. He's near the top of the waiting list for his 2nd choice school but there are no guarantees so we are planning to transfer his scholarship to his 3rd choice school. If his 2nd choice school ends up having a spot open up for him, does anyone know if schoarships can be transferred a 2nd time?

Thank you!

I have not heard or read anything that says it cannot be done, but I would consider if you could wait to do the transfer to the #3 choice as late as possible. Maybe get with the #3 school and tell them the situation. Maybe they can "save" you a spot until a certain date. That date can be the "final decision" date for your DS's chosen school. It is a tough spot and sucks!!

One issue that might come up is NSI. NSI is scheduled through the unit you chose. If you start the process of scheduling NSI and have a iteration date, and then a month later you change schools. It might change your NSI date. It might be fine and no big problem, but it could be a unintended issue.

Just had this same thing happen, but haven’t put money down yet. We were not so warmly welcomed, though - he was basically told he would have little to no chance of getting off the waiting list and would have to pay for the first year and compete for the scholarship next year. We are looking to option 3 now, hoping for a warmer reception and/or no waiting list. I had no idea it would be this hard to switch. Best of luck to you and your son!

Oh I’m sorry to hear that! It’s really difficult to navigate this process. I agree the waitlist is not a viable option for my son. He just wants to be committed and move on. I’m trying to remind myself he will end up where he’s meant to be. Best of luck to you and yours as well!

There is always the possibility of going to #3 school and transferring to another school after freshman year. There is nothing that says the scholarship has to be completed where it starts. You have to get both units to OK transfer, and get accepted to new college. I know not ideal, but at least it is a option if #3 school doesn't work out. Hopefully it will.
