Best Colleges....

Sorry, I did not mean to exclude CGA, or USMMA for that matter.

Didn't think it was a slight. The way has other mission related deaths (not just combat) at CGA (crashes during SAR cases, etc).

I'm not sure if USMMA has something similar. I would assume they do, but I don't know that for sure.

It is surely not "free." Someone pays for it - WE ALL DO. But for the "student", they give back every dime we put in and more.

there are wall of memorials at the State Department, CIA, DIA, NSA, etc. some who are SA grads. A few cannot be named publicly.....

So its all how we define and look at free. In my opinion, an academy degree is not free. It is financed by the tax payer, and its a loan which is paid back either in years of service or in dollars. A cadet can choose to walk away from the service after his receiving his academy BS, but he is then obligated to pay back the US govt approximately $200,000 or more.

Momba, is that true? I have never heard of cadets being given the choice of opting to pay back their educations, and not serving.

It certainly happens in ROTC. In fact it's not usually the cadet's choice and instead they're told to payback or serve. I'm pretty sure I've seen posts in the past where the same thing has happened at the academies.

Yes, it is true. If you leave the academy without serving, you will owe Uncle Sam around 54K a year for every year you were there. This was part of the information included when committing to the USAFA.

If I remember my history right, I think this was in response to those who suddenly had a crisis of conscience after getting their 4 year degree and decided not to serve. I forget when this was in the news, but it was a while back.
