I’m a first time poster, long time reader. Thank you all for all the information and advice. I’ll be as brief as possible.
My DS is a rising high school senior. His first choice for school is the USCGA but from everything we’ve heard, he won’t be competitive for the class of 2020, mostly due to GPA and ACT. Next choice is Norwich or MMI. He’s applying for an NROTC scholarship MO.
He only wants to go to a military school with a Corps of Cadets.
Here’s where he’s at in the process of applying for scholarships and schools:
· Visited Norwich in April and was quite taken with it and the program offered.
· Visited CGA in April and have been on tours of CG facilities in our area. Have gotten a lot of valuable advice and information from CGA grads and neighbors who have gone to the academy or are in the CG now.
· Would like to apply to the CGA for the October deadline but the ACT score may not be back in time. He’s taken it twice and is hoping for a better score the third time. Has been through tutoring. Will apply for the January deadline.
· Will finish the NROTC MO option application this week. Schools listed on that application are: Norwich, Citadel, VMI, VT, Texas A & M. Finishing up his essay for Norwich and will send that ASAP so his application is received first thing in September. Already applied to the Citadel, has heard from admissions, and needs to send ACT scores and a transcript. He will apply to the last three as per their deadlines.
· Anticipating some glitches with the NROTC application – specifically an old “exercise induced asthma” diagnosis – which isn’t a factor any more, but we’ve been told it will probably DQ him for now and a waiver will be applied for. And, he can’t do the requisite number of pull-ups. He’s a long distance runner but doesn’t have a lot of upper body strength. We have him working with a trainer.
· Will apply to MMI – seems like self-prep for CGA would be a good option for him and he’s particularly interested in their flight training. I have spoken at length to the admissions counselor at MMI and have received some very valuable information.
· The NROTC naval contact in our area told him to apply for Army and Air Force ROTC, as well, but he’s just not that interested. We (my husband and I) feel like the Marines and the CG are disparate, that he’d do better in the CG, but we will be supportive of whatever he decides/wherever he ends up.
Bottom line . . . we want to be able to help him make informed decisions. I feel like I’ve done my due diligence over the past year, and am very grateful for any advice and all the information I’ve received on this forum. Any specific advice, comments will be very much appreciated. Thank you for reading!

Have you looked into Texas A & M Corps of Cadets? They have an excellent program there and they offer in state tuition for anyone who obtains a scholarship, no matter how small or how big. They have a very good reputation. I do not know what their requirements are, but you can find out more info on their website.
