Where Are They Now?

I was the original sinner, way back, when I posted about In-N-Out. Maybe we should petition the mods for a general exception, that friendly food posts in the middle of an unrelated thread are a local custom and somewhat permissible. ;)

I feel like this thread has drifted a bit...but I'll add in my update.

I was pretty active on this forum prior to attending USAFA and throughout my time there. I graduated in 2012 and headed to Wright-Patt where I worked in the sensors directorate of the Air Force Research Labs (AFRL) for two years. Next I headed over to the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) where I finished my master's degree in engineering physics. Now I am almost done with PhD classes and just starting research for my PhD in physics. I am projected to finish my PhD in the fall of 2018.

In summary, I am about as close to a professional student as you can get. If anyone has questions about AFIT, I am the person to ask.

DS commissioned in May of 2014 and had a report date for NPS in Charleston. in late august. He worked at the nrotc unit prior to the report date. Power school was very challenging but he graduated with distinction(top 30%) being one of the very few non engineers. After NPS graduation he moved to Saratoga Springs NY to begin nuclear prototype but there was a backlog so DS and 2 other nucs went to Europe and backpacked for 3 weeks and 5 countries. DS is currently in prototype and goes to Groton Conn. in the end of January for SOBC(Sub Officer Basic Course) for 10 weeks. He has been assigned to a fast attack sub out of Pearl Harbor with a report date in April. With the Hawaii COLA, BAh and O-2 the nucs are just shy of 100k. Not bad for a 24 yo and no time to spend it. Its almost 2 years after graduation before the 1st deployment so certainly extensive training.

I imagine your DS has completed Prototype and SOBC and is in Pearl Harbor, or maybe out to sea now? I would love an update.

DS completed SOBC early April and took 10 days to drive cross country with another officer that was assigned to a base in Washington. He flew from San Francisco and was greeted at the airport in Hawaii by the CO and other officers on his sub. He had not arranged housing yet so he is living with a few officers from the academy, I think one was on deployment. His sub has been dry-docked for the last 2 years for a major refit so he spends his time there now. When JO's are in this situation they get temporarily assigned to another sub to begin qualifications. He is just waiting to see what sub that is on. DS has 3 other Nuc buddy's arriving in the next few weeks and will be renting a nice house near the beach in Kailua. Housing is very expensive in Hawaii, but getting 3-4 guys together you can get a nice place and bank a lot of the BAH and usually half of the roommates are deployed. We want to go out and see him sometime this year but can't make arrangements until we know his schedule.

He should have a great time in Hawaii, my son has been stationed there since Oct. 2013 and has loved it. Great that he has some roommates, really allows them to save some money while they are there, that and the OCONUS COLA really helps. Kailua is a beautiful place with great beaches, the H-3 can be a bit of a struggle with traffic each day but he'll get a feel for how much time to allow pretty quick.

I sure understand the schedule issues, it was always hard to figure a time to go visit, son's schedule would seem to change all the time.

I haven't been on this forum for some time, so I thought I would post an update..
DS was a DMG ROTC graduate and commissioned Infantry in December 2012. He attended IBOLC at Fort Benning 3 months later. Following completion of IBOLC, he completed Ranger School (without recycling), MLC and RSCL before PCSing to Italy. He has served as a PL for a majority of his time there with 2 deployments. He would probably tell you that the highlight of time there was a 2 week PL joint training period with the French Foreign Legion. He is scheduled to attend SFAS some time later this year.

In the "where are they now" category (as opposed to "what are they eating now" division):

GOT TWINS WHO PINNED ON CAPTAINS BARS TODAY???

I DO!
Sigh. My favorite pay raise: O-3 and 4 years in grade. Congratulations!

I just received a barrage of 5 texted photos from our scattered group of USNA '14 sponsor family, promoted to 0-2 today, who coordinated a message of love and thanks. My favorite week in May, with the plebes doing Herndon and the firsties rolling out, and past classes checking in.

My DS was pin on his railroad track bars (O3) in July... AFROTC grad. However, Bullet and my latest update regarding where are they now. He is still deployed, expected return date end of June/early July. In November Bullet and I will welcome into this world our 1st grandbaby. It will be a girl.

So to recap...Commissioned 2012. Winged 2014. 1st OPS base Feb. 2015. Purchased his 1st home Feb 2015. 1st puppy Mar 2015. 2nd puppy Nov 2015. 1st baby Nov. 2016.

We are all getting old on here together. My son gets his Silver Bar sometime this week, I think. Marriage is starting to come into the conversation. His GF's father is a Col in the Air Force and my son and he are currently stationed at the same base. I hope it happens, she is a great girl, great family, and I want to be a grandfather sooner than later. In the last 4 years, I have survived a heart attack, Colon Cancer, and last June a very serious car accident. It is a wonder I am alive and not paralyzed. I don't want to take anymore chance, I want to see a grandbaby. We have 6 kids 18 - 28 and none are married, or even close to marriage except the pilot.

Devil,

My money's on you and I giving odds that you'll have all kinds of DGD's and DGS's crawling all over you before it's all said and done.

We've had three grands in 18 months, and I will say, it is just the best best best! All live far away from the Steeler Nation (and one actually took a photograph of DGS in a Green Bay Packers shirt; divorce pending (JUST KIDDING!!!!)).

Devil, we can get together and discuss pharmacology and other happy topics. I've had five major surgeries in 15 months; not fun.

Maybe that can be a new thread: we're old and can you top this? haha

S just made Lt. jg 2 years out of USNA. I presume that is standard.

Nice little pay bump: both a rank increase and over 2 years, or "O-2 over 2." See DFAS pay tables.

http://www.dfas.mil/militarymembers/payentitlements/military-pay-charts.html

Promotion to O-2 and 0-3 is generally "fog-a-mirror" with CO's check in the "recommend for promotion" block, with promotion usually occurring on or about commissioning anniversary, at years 2 and 4.

Promotions to O-4 and beyond are board competitions, with selection percentages dropping significantly with each succeeding rank.

Nice to see the progression.
