I know that people can't tell accurately but I was wondering what people thought. I plan on applying to NASS and USAFA SS as well.
Thanks in advance

Hey I'm also a junior like you trying to get into the service academies, I feel like we have pretty similar stats. I can't say much for your chances however because I don't really know much about the admissions process. But seeing as we have pretty similar stats and people commented on my post telling me that I had a good chance I think you do to. Good luck with your application.

It's almost December of your junior year with no SAT or ACT? 4 year soccer and track? If you're a junior you probably have 3 soccer letters and 2 track. Don't count your chickens.

PSAT is low. Not exclusionary, but low. Your Eagle Scout is great, and top 10% is great. Volunteering is excellent too.

You need leadership. You need AP classes. Also, I roll my eyes when I hear things like:

"Burning passion to go has been my dream to attend a service academy since I was 5."

Really? 5? Thinking about college at age 5? My kids were playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

You have time to gain leadership and take the ACT or SAT. Good luck. If I were you I wouldn't make gaining an appointment the end all be all. Have some backup plans because "It ain"t easy."

It might not be too fair to immediately discredit that aspirations to attend academies can start at such a young age. I can definitely relate--it's been my dream to attend a service academy since I was 4 or 5 as well. Being at USAFA was literally my first tangible memory. I remember being asked as early as first grade what I wanted to do after high school, and I would always immediately reply that I wanted to graduate from USAFA and serve as a 2nd Lieutenant like my sister.

To edthomas, I suggest you use this burning passion or whatever narrative you're able to construct about the academies and clearly express it to individuals who will play a role in your application process. This helped me out a ton in my teacher evals, letters of rec, and especially my BGO and ALO interviews -- they could clearly see how serious and gung-ho I was/am about the academies. Otherwise, I'm no ALO, but a lot of your other stats look to be on the right track. Any opportunities for advancement to leadership positions in Spanish Club, MUN, or soccer?

I've also listened to years' worths of spiels about how academics are also incredibly important. I'm not sure exactly how accurate this is, but here's a chart for comparing PSAT scores to ACT scores. http://mytutor.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/PSAT-ACT-conversion-charts2.pdf According to the chart, your score of 1230 is comparative to 26-27. The averages ACT scores of USAFA tend to be around 30, so shoot for that. I think it's definitely doable. Sign up to take the ACT sometime soon (February?) to get an idea about where you need to improve and how you can go about doing so.

I ended up going to NASS, and it was a fantastic experience. Highly recommend it. Make sure to get your apps done as soon as possible. For whatever reason, I ended up doing my apps on the very last day of the deadline.. and I got waitlisted at USMA SLE (and didn't get in), so learn from my mistake!

Actually sir in all honesty yes it has been my dream to attend an academy since I was 5. I grew up in Colorado Springs right next to USAFA when I was young. I always knew I wanted to fly since I was little and watching cadets fly around my house inspired me.
With the sports they are estimates yes you are correct I have only 3 years of soccer and 2 years of track under my belt.

I am currently taking 3 AP classes and the rest honors 7 courses in total this year

And any advice on leadership would be greatly appreciated

With the SAT I'm finishing the prep class this month so I'm taking the January test date that is why. The PSAT scores are from sophomore year and I missed my junior ones because I was sick the day of the test.

Thanks for replying and yes one of my teachers is actually a former USNA grad and I love talking to him about the academies and he sees my passion.

The PSAT scores are from sophomore year and I didn't take the junior ones as I was sick the day of the test and I know I would've scored higher on them. The SAT and ACT i plan to take them both in January/ February

Leadership I hope I can be the captains of both teams I play on I plan on running for student government I did freshman and sophomore year and was elected Vice President both times and clubs also I want to run for officer positions

Honestly, for as often as the 'chance me' question gets asked on here, the real answer is 'we don't know'..............None of us work in admissions, so we don't know the current formula being used to assess ECA's, sports and leadership. Other things also count like how well you will do on interviews (NOM or BGO) or what your teacher recommendations might say, but we won't have access to those. Your time is better spent doing the best you can in h.s. and read over the hundreds/thousands of prior topics asking a similar question. Also review the USNA website that discusses their expectations of those applying.

...and I'll bet even those who do work in admissions couldn't answer the question for a potential candidate of a future class.

The hard fact is most people who apply just don't get in due to the numbers working against them. I agree with time2 that it's good to do your research on typical statistics, but a waste of time to try to gauge your chances.

Yes i know that no one knows what the academy wants I've talked to midshipmen and cadets from USAFA and they don't even know what admissions wants. I was just wondering what people thought and reading around I feel good about what I have compared to other people that have gotte in but it's all up in the air I understand that. I've know people with incredible GPAs get turned down and people with lower GPAs get in

My advice would be this. Do your best, work hard to improve your test scores and try not to compare yourself to others. Take the ACT/SAT as often as you like to get scores you are happy with. My DD's school does not have clubs where students can be president or whatever and They don't a student council. Remember it is about the all around person. Research and find all the information you can and make a binder with sections in it to help you stay organized. (Well it helped us anyway). That will really help when it comes time to start the application process. You will have everything you need right at your finger tips. It's a long process and it can be stressful at times. My DD had always said she wanted to be a dentist from age 4 and go to UNC until she took a trip to USNA in 8th grade with her school and now it is all about USNA. She does have plans A-Z in case it doesn't work out for her to go to USNA so be sure you have a back up plan. SA's were the furthest thing from my mind but this is what she wants. Be sure you want this and not doing it to please your parents or anyone else. Stay positive and surround yourself with positive people. Good luck!

According to a USAToday article on USMA '16 admissions, the chances are 51% for fully qualified nominated candidates. I'd guess USNA for 2021 will be about the same.

OP. SAT scores within 2020 USNA Class profile for 50th percentile range - but I'm sure you will do better on the real SAT. I don't see any STEM activities on your resume - look for opportunities to expand here.

According to a USAToday article on USMA '16 admissions, the chances are 51% for fully qualified nominated candidates.

That is rather misleading since it is saying WHEN you get to be 3Q AND have a NOM.................however, many candidates never get that far, for a variety of reasons. The OP is only a junior in h.s. and therefore hasn't even begun the application process.

I was a member of my school FRC robotics team(I left because of the conflictions with crew and all my ap's),and I currently am in the TARC I might even be captain if things go well. Is that enough?

Apply for Summer Seminar and Candidates Visit Weekend as soon as those apps open! My DD didn't even know the Academy existed until she got a USNA postcard inviting her to apply to Summer Seminar her junior year. Once she applied she got invited to apply for CVW.... she fell in love, with Annapolis, with the Academy, with the Navy, with serving her country as a Naval Officer. Now I have to make her apply to colleges as she waits to hear on her (hopeful) appointment. But just as many students go to USNASS and know immediately it's not for them. Keep plugging along, it is a long and arduous process. ⚓

Thanks I'm gonna apply to NASS when the applications open for it next month. I got invited to a CVW at the beginning of last month and that experience made USNA my top choice for college and best of luck to your DS hope she receives her appointment soon

Attend Boys State over the summer. It will give a big boost to your leadership score.

Hey! I'm in the same boat as you, 1230 on PSAT but I'm not too worried because it's out of 1520 and not 1600. I'll be applying for NASS as well. I play sports and have a solid resume. Keep grinding, ultimately YOU decide if you're good enough and you'll have to work for it. The academies don't come easy. Hoping to see you at NASS!
