  • Can you get good info from usafa on why ds received TWE. Asking so ds has good picture of risk and opportunity as free agent.

Virtually impossible but...if you wish to PM me with the following:

GPA, SAT/ACT scores in each category...that'll give me a start...I can probably guess, but getting a precise "why" from ANY SA is not going to happen.
My DS received nomination but just received TWE. We aren’t surprised but we were hoping for falcon or prep school. His plan b is to self prep. He is very interested in NWP. He has a 24 act which we assume was the largest factor in TWE. We are willing to take risk. He is contemplating joining reserves or air guard. Not sure if he could do that and NWP. Any advice

If he wishes to "self prep" then he must not join either the Guard or Reserves. If he does that, he's not going to the academy unless he applied through the USAF program called "LEAD." So steer him clear of that option for now. The 24 ACT is a definite red flag. He needs to be in the 30+ range, honestly. That is doable...I went from a 25 to a 34 when I went to NWP...40 years ago!
I would like to apply for the SLE 2019, but part 1 of the application requires me to answer the Candidate Questionnaire, which I can't do because it says it's for the class of 2023 only (I'm class of 2024). How can I apply for SLE when I am unable to complete the questionnaire on their website?

    flieger83
The Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) 2019 application period is not open yet and will open on January 15, 2019. SLE is highly competitive since there are normally 6,000 applicants and capacity for just 1,000 attendees.
    Hi Flieger,
Quick question, there was a NAPS 2019 Appointment Thread under the Prep School section, and I can't seem to locate it. Was it deleted for some reason?
    Thanks!

    Hmm...I don't know...if I find anything out I'll let you know.

Yes he is a junior. I just didn't know if that application as we have it was the "final" and if I could change it. Thank you so much. My DS will be on it today!!!

Sorry I have another question. Is it a problem if my DS didn't use his summer seminar application for the PCQ?
    flieger83
    flieger83
    Not a problem!
Not sure if this is the avenue I need to pursue to have a post removed, but could you please remove my most recent post? I provided too much information in my post and I would like to have it removed. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you for your insights. My DS submitted his pre-application a little over a week ago. His status changed to "applicant" the next day. Do you know roughly how long it takes to progress to candidate status so he can start his application? Meanwhile, he's working on his nominations. Thx

    Hi!

The applicant to candidate will be decided when they have looked at his package...if they think it's something they're really interested in, they'll "flip the switch" otherwise he'll have to wait like most folks, until he has a nomination. Nothing to worry about at this time.

Are his numbers good?? SAT/ACT, GPA, etc??
    Hi Sir,
recently finished online pre-candidate submission and was curious on the relationship between ALO and apllicant. Most say get to know them and make sure they know you, but what's the best way to do that? I already made some contact with my local ALO but I'm unsure how to proceed. Everytime I look up USAFA questions the best answers have been on this forum and answered by you, so here we go, thanks!

Alright, thanks! I've only fully contacted them for a few questions but not a real inroduction just yet. Glad for the heads up though.

Oh, another question Sir, since I'm not sure if the ALO I was given is the official one.. Is it appropriate to set up a meeting for more direct contact and introduction?
    flieger83
    flieger83
Not necessary at this time. First you make contact, tell who you are, your goals, etc. Then you wait a while to see what comes back. Right now I'd wait.
    Hello Sir,
I am an USMMA appointee, I have long been deciding between flying for the Navy or the AF, while wanting to experience sailing at sea. I am also seeking for a MMA alumni who is/was commissioned in the AF and possibly fly in the AF to gain some advice. As if now, do you by any chance know if there's possibility for a KP graduate to be on active duty and receive a pilot slot in the AF ?
    flieger83
    flieger83
The big things that delay or disqualify folks for SUPT in the AF are: color vision test, depth perception, and uncorrected vision. Right now you need 20/20 uncorrected. That can, and has, changed over the years due to the needs of the AF.
    T
    teddybear97
I current do not have a 20/20 visions but it's correctable. I am planning to do LASIK in the near future to resolve this eye vision problem. Some people have been telling me that all Arm Forces are currently in need of the female pilots, since I am a female, will I be in a better position? I'm just afraid that things will change in 4 years and they would no longer need as many pilots as they do now.
    flieger83
    flieger83
DO NOT DO IT!! If you have any corrective eye surgery before entering the USAF you will be permanently grounded; and there's no waiver. There is a process to have the AF select you and then they take care of everything. But do NOTHING on your own.
Flieger83 - Sorry for the confusion. The school had an enlistment ceremony in Aug. where the freshman ROTC cadets on scholarship enlisted. My understanding was that they became property of the air force for 8 years at that point. My thinking that "enlistment ceremony" meant "enlisted" has caused the confusion. Thank you for clarifying the use of the AF FM1786. Very much appreciated. Thank you for serving as an ALO.
Good Morning flieger83, I have a question regarding my DS. DS Applied/Nominated USAFA last year, was not accepted. Enlisted AFROTC this year. Spoke with det leaders and expressed that he was a re-apply. His det Aerospace Studies had him fill out an O-076 form. We came across the AF Form 1786 and of course were wondering if DS was qualified to submit this form as well. DS is unsure to ask this question internally.
    flieger83
    flieger83
Okay...I'm confused; you say he "enlisted AFROTC" this year. You can't be enlisted and be in AFROTC. Is he in college taking AFROTC or is he enlisted?

If he's enlisted, then there's an entirely different process he has to go through.

Re-reading your post, you mention the Det Aero Studies officer; that means he's in college taking AFROTC; he can't use AF FM1786; that's only for enlisted members of the service.
    Also my CFA scores are
    Male:
    Throw: 61
    Pull Ups: 11
    Shuttle Run: 8.1
    Sit-Ups: 65
    Push-Ups: 61
    Mile Run: 6:14

    Hi!

I like your numbers; they're competitive! As for the call from the MOC's office, that sounds to me like they're going to set you up for an interview. That's a GOOD thing!!!

Summer Seminar...it really doesn't have anything to do with your package; and admissions won't see it.

    Steve
    Flieger83,

I received word from my congressman's office and they said they really like my application and that I should be expecting an email from them soon. I forgot to mention that I attended USAFA summer seminar. Does that have any impact on my application? Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback. My High school counselor suggested against taking the SAT because of my low PSAT scores. She has also suggested that my application is good but not extremely competitive. Is there anything I can do, besides ACT, to increase my chances of getting in? Thank you
    flieger83
    flieger83
I think your package is competitive except for the scores. IF you can bring them up like we discussed, then I think you'd be in the hunt. Does that guarantee anything? Nope. But if you've got excellent "backup plans" then you should be doing well!
Hello Sir, I am currently applying to USAFA and I was wondering if you could give me your thoughts on my application.

I am a Senior at a nationally recognized private high school. I have been working at a restaurant for two years. I have a varsity letter in cross country and tennis(team captain). I am the President of Spanish and Bible Club. I am a class officer in student government. I volunteer at my church every Sunday as a sunday school teacher.

In Civil Air Patrol I am 1st Sergeant, Cadet Leadership Officer, and Color Guard Commander. I will receive my Mitchell in two months. I went to the USAFA summer seminar program. My GPA is a 4.17. My class rank is 11 out of 163 students. My ACT is a 29. English, Math, Reading, and Science: 27, 27, 31, 30.

    flieger83
    Hi!

I like your leadership background, teamwork, academics, etc. You only list ACT scores so I'm going to guess you haven't taken the SAT. You "might" want to try that just to see how you do; the academy will take the best of either. Your ACT of 29 is excellent!! Try to get the math above 30...if you could get the math and English above 30, that'd be great!
Hello flieger83 Im a mom with a question, do you mind? my DD will apply next year to USAF.

Sure, what can I share with you?

My question is, my DD will apply to 3 SA as well as AFROTC , so for the recommendation letters she will ask 3 same teachers, so, this the teachers need to write a letter to EACH , SA , with the name on it, or can be 1 letter per teacher adress to WHO IT MAY CONCERN, maybe silly question, but want to be sure. Thank you.
    Hello sir,

I am hoping to attend USMA/USAFA. I was wondering if you could provide your opinion on whether or not I should join CAP/JROTC? I am planning on doing Model UN, NHS, and Girls State in high school, as well as varsity swimming/track.
    flieger83
    flieger83
CAP/JROTC are both superb programs! I have been a member of CAP for...41 years! And I teach AFJROTC. Either one will give you excellent opportunities to exercise leadership, learn leadership, and help you grow.

BUT...only do it if you want to! Don't do it because you think it'll "look good." Because then you won't pursue it, you'll just "be there."

    FutureCadet12
Thank you for your response. I am probably going to be doing JROTC, but my only concern is that it might prevent me from taking a class, since it takes up one class period in my schedule. There's always the option of taking a 0 hour class, but that would start at 6:30 in the morning... yikes.
    flieger83
    flieger83
"0" hour? That's when my drill team meets!
Based on what I said yesterday what else should I know about the application process of the academies?
