    PCS Tips for Hawaii

Respect for the Locals Common courtesy and respect for the locals go a long way. If you are not familiar with Island culture there's a lot to learn. So many military folks go to Hawaii and have little to no interaction with the kamaainas - being content to stay in the security of the base...

    USMA August Graduation 2013

Are there any present or former parents on this thread that have had a cadet graduate in August? We were informed not long ago that this is the case for our firstie. Do they still participate in all the normal May graduation week activities (with the exception of graduation itself?) Any insight...

    Army-Navy Game

“We should all be proud as Americans that that guy is going to go protect our country,” Niumatalolo explained in his own press conference. “They don’t get any tougher than Trent Steelman. Four years starting at West Point, a military service academy. I know everyone in our locker room has...

    Army 10 Miler - DC 21 Oct 2012

I have seen large contingents of Cadets running this race in the past. Does anyone know if a certain number of entries are set aside for cadets? I know the Army Marathon Team regularly shows up, but I was wondering about those cadets who just want to run for fun. Any insight...

What is the $$$ Value of the appointment to an Academy

Value of 4 Years at an SA On one occasion, I saw a large styrofoam check, with six figures (starting with a 4) dragged out and presented to the appointee at the HS awards ceremony. While it's great (and appropriate) to recognize the achievement, attaching a value to it reeks of elitism...

    West Point 2013 Class Crest

Hey Buff - Would be interested to know whatever you can find out from the Cadet Store. I recall purchasing a gold class crest when I graduated USNA (long ago) and giving it to my mom for mother's day...made a big hit. Thanks!

    Have I got this right?

We are in N Va and our son made it home every long weekend his plebe year. (I know...The Corps Has...!) Apparently now plebes can earn a "spirit pass" if they do something good or show exceptional initiative. This entitles them to a WE pass. Not a bad deal...even if your home is not...

Meet America's Best Business Schools (You'll Be Surprised!)

Al Haig - Naval Academy? "Naval Academy graduate Alexander Haig, President Reagan’s first Secretary of State and now CEO of his own company, suggests that "the academies are the finest institutions in the world at teaching honor, ethics, integrity, and loyalty. What you learn at a place like...

USNA vs USMA -- I'm wedged on a decision!

"In the Navy, you will Select Naval Aviator, Naval Flight Ops, Subs, Surface Warfare. Just a tiny few do other things like Grad School, SEALS, etc." Dunninla - You left out another "minor" USNA option - that of the Marine Corps. THe USMC has Officer MOSs that equate with most of the Army...

USNA vs USMA -- I'm wedged on a decision!

Congratulations! SimpleMan - Congratulations on securing LOAs to both USMA and USNA. Do you have appointments to both? I was a little confused by your reference to starting your nomination interviews. Unless things have changed in the admissions process, I was under the impression that...

    When he REALLY be home?

Welcome to the Navy Not unusual for the end of a cruise to be a "moving target". I once deployed to the Med for a 6-month cuise that turned into a 9. Expect more of the same throughout his career.

    Rejected

FUTUREMID - Great that you are applying again. What are your plans in the interim? Another school? Be sure to take challenging courses/ maybe retake SATs and stay in close contact w/ B&G officer & admissions. Admissions looks favorably on repeat candidates. I was one way back...

    Religiosity at the Academies

    2 for 7 - Not actually 2yrs for 7yrs anymore

It would be Honorable if it's a straight washout for either academic or aptitude reasons. I guess money is tight and it's a sign of the times that "fallen angels" are no longer offered the opportunity to be AMDOs or SWOs. This used to be the case in the early eighties. Seems to me...

    Service academies

Agolson - Books have been written on this subject, but here are a few bullets to ponder: - At civilian colleges, students are graded on academics. At Service Academies, Cadets / Midshipmen are not only graded on academics, but also graded 24x7 on military performance, leadership, physical...

    Army-Navy

Everybody here needs to lighten up. Trust me -The Navy goat mascot having fun with the Cadets is mild compared to some of the Army/Navy pranks that both WP and USNA have pulled off in the past.
