    Induction Day Class of 2013

We had reservations for the original date, and then changed it to the new date in the spring of this year. We didn't have trouble making the reservation in...? March?

Wow--twins with LOA's!! Way to go!!!

    The Visit...

I second that. We didn't call when we took our son (now plebe) to visit. We just went. Be sure you know when those admissions briefings are--you really need to go to that!! We also paid to take the tour...although we had to bolt when it was time for the admissions briefing or we'd have been...

    Financial Responsibilities for new Midshipmen

I can only address what I *think* is true for my 2012'er. There were no upfront costs. A year ago, at an admissions briefing, they told us there would be an upfront cost of $2500 for the computer and some other things. That has obviously changed. I *think* the ACE loan covered uniforms and...

Anyone have experience with USNA Foundation?

I'm completely biased in this area, so forgive me. And I mean absolutely no disrespect whatsoever to others in different experiences! I think the plebes who came out of a prep school environment--NAPS or Foundation--are MUCH better prepared for the environment of the Academy than someone...

Anyone have experience with USNA Foundation?

Thanks--and you're right. It's more of the non-NAPS prep school environment that I was trying to describe. We really struggled to explain prep school to our "people" back here at home. Our son had to get over the notion that he was repeating his senior year--and he got over that REAL quick. His...

What time frame is best to complete the USNA application?

He was not recruited for a sport, we are not alumni, and he did not get a LOA. He had 700 math SAT and like 530 verbal SAT. I'm sure the verbal score hurt him. He retook a few times (3 SAT's total? not a ton) to bring up that verbal score, but it didn't move. I don't know exactly his...

Anyone have experience with USNA Foundation?

That's interesting. My son got >700 on math SAT and needed to brush up his verbals. I think NAPS is more secure and more military. MUCH more military. If USNA wanted him in an environment with fewer distractions (not those of his own creation, but of media, etc--even before this presidential...

What time frame is best to complete the USNA application?

My 2012'er did the bulk of the app in the summer between junior and senior year. I swear he worked on one part or another every single day. Complete one section, get into the next. Get the DodMERB physical. Get a letter here, get a letter there. He had it done early fall. Interviewed with MOC...

Anyone have experience with USNA Foundation?

I have this informal impression: NAPS is for people like ...former enlisted--it wouldn't be appropriate to send them to prep school--which is basically like a 5th year of high school. It's also for athletic recruits (for instance) who may need the year of military discipline and physical...

Anyone have experience with USNA Foundation?

It went exactly as planned! He called yesterday from the midst of Plebe Summer, and is doing well! It took until mid-April to hear, but he got the appointment--along with 3 other guys at the same prep school who were also Foundation students. It's pretty straight-forward. They are sponsored...

A special Thank You to Zaphod

I second that motion. My son had already applied and spent most of his Foundation year when I found this site, but Zaphod's advice and experiences are so helpful. I forwarded more than a few of them to my son, who also took the oath 2 days ago. Thumbs up!

    nominations?

This just strikes me as prideful overconfidence.

    What would be my chances?

Make sure you are ACTIVE in those activities and actually contributing in a meaningful way. The USAA (Achivement Academy) and the President's Academic Award are pretty vanilla. All you had to do was have an A and you get those. Same with German National Honor Society. Those are just names on a...

    FYI-passports

Our son applied for his over Christmas break. 6 weeks later he got a letter from the state department apologizing for losing his birth certificate. 2 weeks later he got his passport. 2 weeks later his birth certificate came back in the mail. Don't wait!

    USNA Website

Thanks! Son had some things to check, and *poof* the site was gone! I'm sure he'll check later. Hopefully it's up then!

    Post-Wisdom Teeth Panorex?

Son had his wisdom teeth out 10 days ago--goes for a follow up dentist appointment tomorrow. Does he need to get a second panorex to send in, showing the wisdom teeth gone? Or just a letter? (This should be obvious, but he'll be a Plebe in July.)

    wisdom teeth and USNA

I'm sure this has been discussed before, and so I apologize in advance. Son got his appointment to USNA. With appointment package came request for criminal background checks, birth certificate, and panorex. Today, the dentist who did the panorex said he'll probably need to get his wisdom...
