Drop in applications to Service Academies?

I was told that the AFA had a 20% drop in apps? I was just told this, so no facts yet to back it up. Has anyone else heard this - or something similar for the other Service Academies?

Does early college hurt or help getting an Appointment?

My 2016 cadet dual enrolled in a four year college his senior year (took two courses each semester) and then also proceeded to attend the same college as a full time student the next year before going to the Academy. So, I'm not sure I understand the recommendation for avoiding college classes...

Will the government shutdown affect nominations?

Core Values I am a mother of a cadet. I have family who have been or are in the military in a variety of settings, none of whom would have responded in a degrading or disrespectful manner to someone posting. I am baffled as to why being on a "military tour" (or several) justifies this. I have...

    Sleeping Bag

My C4C did the same - slept on top of his made bed and didn't have to worry about Sami's at all. He requested it and was glad to have it.

If I have done marijuana once, will it be counted against me in the admission process

Tell the truth The Academy expects truth, regardless of the choices inherent in that truth. Believe all posts regarding telling the truth. In the end, they are looking for character and integrity. Someone with character and integrity doesn't lie, and that is one measure by which you'll be...

    debts

My 2016 DS went to one year of college and had a small student loan. We (his parents) are making the payments so he is absolved of the debt. It has been a non-issue (we did this on the recommendation of another parent from an earlier year).

    Mail Call

Ouch. Former English teacher/current writer here and whole-heatedly agree about the hand-written letter. The Write2them staff has former SA affiliation, so I doubt I have to worry about privacy. Just saying, again, that my son RECEIVED correspondence (which is also sometimes more important than...

    Mail Call

We had letters sent from home from various family members, and according to when they were sent (actual dates) they didn't always get through as quickly - and the Write2them email is sent immediately (hence the use of email for everyone nowadays). The Write2them is centered in Colorado Springs...

    Mail Call

Write2them I HIGHLY recommend the write2them website. These emails get through and are delivered more frequently than regular mail. After sending one or two letters, I used only the Write2them site. It was amazing - and even for my "independent" 2016 cadet, it was super appreciated because he...

    Mail in Jacks Valley

My son was also a grazer and had a second "dinner" each night before bedtime. In his first letter he said he developed the attitude that at meals he would eat until he felt physically sick (he takes one of everything). On Sunday, when we talked to him, he did say there were a few times he was...

    Placement Tests

Thanks! He did speak to the Math department before he left and sent the required information for transfer credit. I'll just have to wait and see!

    Placement Tests

We just got our first letter and he took the tests for Calc I and II, but not the others. From our understanding before he inprocessed, that is what he expected and that he would take other exams later...? Anyway, I'll just send his notes and see what happens. He has sent all his transcripts...

    Placement Tests

My son is a BC for class of 2016. He took AP Calc as a junior (received a 5), has taken Calc II, Multivariable Calc, Differential Equations, and Non-linear Dynamics and Chaos (all the latter courses were taken at a liberal arts college and he received A's). He contacted the math dept. before...

    Questions about "Instructions to Appointees"

"Personal Debt" - Instructions to Appointees My son has an appointment for the class of 2016 and has spent the last year at a private, four year college. He has a Federal Direct Unsubsidized loan in his name to pay for part of his tuition. Under the Instructions to Appointees, there is a...
