My News from USAFA Parent's Weekend

Perspective is everything. No matter what assignment your DS gets he will need to lead people. His reputation as a leader will be determined by his perspective on serving. Sounds like he has a good start.

My News from USAFA Parent's Weekend

I flew C-130s and then 2 years in Predators during the opening days of Afghanistan/Iraq. I was given a choice to stay in RPAs and head to the Pentagon or go back to manned aircraft. It was a family choice to return to manned aircraft (mostly based on location). In time, perceptions will...

My News from USAFA Parent's Weekend

Just a few corrections. There were 95 RPA slots for the class of 2016. I would expect later classes to get a set number of slots depending on AF needs at the time. They don't just pass slots down to the next class. Also, RPA is the future of the AF (like it or not). These systems are...

    Parents in Air Force

Who you know always helps with recommendations but a solid record is still needed. The only advantage to having a parent (1 or both) on active duty or retired is the Presidential Nomination. If you have a Presidential nom and get a Congressional nomination your record will be reviewed twice...

    Systems Engineering Major

My DS is getting his BS in Systems Engineering with a concentration on Human Factors. After looking at all available degrees this seemed to fit his personality and plans to become an AF pilot. He hasn't given much thought to his master's but will most likely go for something management...

    Dating at the Academy.

Cadating My cadet compares dating at the Academy to finding a parking spot at Wal-mart. The most convenient ones are handicap and off limits. The best ones are taken. And the rest are undesirable and not worth the walk. Just focus on building life-long friends and not dating for a...

    Chances?

There are a lot of good records that get turned away. The one thing that people forget is that the Academy wants to reflect the general population. A kid form rural Illinois with a good record may beat out a a kid from Chicago with an exceptional record. A person of one race may get...

USAFA vs AFROTC - please dont start a word war.

I was ROTC and had a very successful career as an AF pilot. My son is at the Academy and I expect that he will also have a very successful career as an AF pilot. The biggest difference that I've seen over the past 20 years is the camaraderie. I didn't keep any of my ROTC relationships after...

    First Year

Its all attitude and perspective. My son (C4C) admits to having to deal with the hardships (games) of being a cadet, but he also admits to meeting good friends who are there through the good and not so good times. If it was easy then it wouldn't be worth it.

    Aero Club vs Powered Flight

Only you can decide. Anyone can be taught to fly, but the greatest pilots I've know had a passion for the sky. If the poem below gives you chills, then flying may be a passion and you just need the right instructor. If it doesn't, then focus on making an impact in another career. "High...

    2016 Swearing In Ceremony

Does anyone have a time and location for the ceremony? My best guess is 0830 on the parade field (wx permitting). View from the Chapel wall.

    USAFA true or false?

From an AF officer who did a non flying gig as an intel officer prior to pilot training and has been stationed on a Navy base and worked in a joint assignment I think I'm somewhat of an expert. Every service will tell you their the best, just as every pilot will tell you they fly the best...

    AFROTC

It varies slightly by Det. However, you can expect a class plus PT and participation in Leadership Lab (how to march, salute, etc). There is not much expected by a Freshman. However, this may be the key to your success. Remember the saying about first impressions lasting. Find a way to show...

    Congressional Nomination?

Go to your MOC's website and look for constituent services or academy nominations. The process should be outlined with deadlines. Good luck.

    Waitlisted

A quick count shows about 7 'wait listed' represented on the forum. Correct me if I missed a few. I just want to know who to watch when the news starts coming in. My AF career has taught me that success is all about skill, luck, and timing. Those on the 'wait list' are obviously skilled...

    Class of 2016-Mailbox Stalkers Club

My DS is in the same situation. Happy to still be in the running but ready to know the future. This year has given many a taste of what the real Air Force is like. You don't have much control and never really will. That's what makes it so much fun (for the right people).
