    Just for fun

USNA did (or used to, obviously covid changes things) bring dogs to mitscher hall every day around lunch time during finals week for the mids to come and pet as a stress release. Other than that you aren't likely to interact with any dogs unless your sponsor has one. There are no dog...

    Understanding NFO

Well, as I said above, what an NFO does varies dramatically based on what platform they are on. An E-2 NFO is going to be doing something entirely different than an F-18 NFO for example. A rough summary: F-18 WSO: handles comms/navigation for the aircraft. Does necessary...

    Understanding NFO

With respect to the other posters, a lot of the responses to this thread include rather dated information. I am a recently winged Naval Flight Officer and would be happy to answer some general questions about my designator. Pilots and NFOs begin their training together at Introductory Flight...

AFA Likely to Commission 60 Officers From Class of 2020 into Space Force

The Naval Academy commissions ~260 Marine Corps officers a year vice the 60 asserted by the article. Not that that particularly matters, just thought I would clarify for the young ones on the forum.

You submit a package, the board meets, and then they assign you to another community. I would say most people get their first or second choice but anything can happen.

If it was for any other medical issue, or if they quit, or if they failed out, then they go to something called a POCR board that will reassign them to another community. You can rank any community that you are qualified for when you submit a package. Meaning that you can request to go Intel...

It depends on what they were attrited for. If it was for being too tall or if their eyes were too bad for pilot but still pretty good, then the could redesignate to Naval Flight Officer, thus staying in naval aviation.

    SWO Ship Selection

What you said about Rota is surprising, typically it is very desirable. When I was at USNA(14-18) the Rota spots were gone by the 10th or so pick every year.

    Delayed Flight School Question

Definitely true. One of my instructors (Marine F18 pilot) spent 5 & 1/2 years in flight school! While getting delayed is definitely more common than getting sped up, the opposite can still happen. I am going to wing about 2 months earlier than predicted.

    Delayed Flight School Question

Validating IFS will help to an extent, although it will not expedite the process as much as it will for Navy students. My Marine friends that validated said that they had to wait for everybody in the TBS class ahead of theirs to class up for API before they could, even if those people had to...

    Delayed Flight School Question

My friend finished TBS in December '18, got to pensacola that January, and did not class up for IFS until May. The Marines have always moved slowly through the program, and I would fully expect to be waiting 6+ months to start. Schools Command will be even more backed up that usual considering...

how long are medical waivers valid for?

As stated earlier, USNA can only grant waivers for admission to USNA itself. In other words, just because you get a waiver from USNA, does not mean that you will get one from West Point, or even NROTC for that matter. Additionally, as A6E pointed out, a waiver for admission is not the same as...

how long are medical waivers valid for?

Potentially most of the service assignments, depending on the condition, as some of my classmates found out.

What disqualifies for a pilot slot?

Eczema, seasonal pollen, and LASIK( funny enough, the Navy will give you eye surgery to fly, but technically eye surgery is disqualifying to fly, they just give you a waiver if the surgery turns out okay). I'm not trying to scare you, but there are a number of things that you might not be aware...

What disqualifies for a pilot slot?

Are you asking if the tests themselves are waiverable or if waivers are granted for medical issues that might DQ you from flying? The answer to the first question is a resounding no, the answer to the second is it depends. I'm on several waivers and was still cleared to fly. It all depends...

Service Selection Class of 2020 is Today

For many of those communities, since they are so selective, you kinda have to be all or nothing. Since there are so few spots, those communities won't even entertain somebody that doesn't desire it as their first choice. I think this depends on who is running the SEAL program at the Academy...

Service Selection Class of 2020 is Today

You haven't said what they were assigned or what their original preferences were. If you truly are looking for an explanation, that information would be helpful, though it is certainly your prerogative whether or not to provide it. Were they sub/nuke drafted? That would explain a lot.

    Branch Night Class of 2020

Curious about PADSO since we don't have anything like that down in Annapolis (or in the Navy). To me it seems like this is a way better deal for the Army that the cadet. I'm not sure how the Army is in terms of time away from home, but in my community in the Navy it's not unusual to spend 2/3...

    Service Selection

Very true. It just makes me chuckle that just two years ago the Marines had a massive shortfall and would take anybody with a pulse and a passing PFT, even if they didn't go to leatherneck. It goes to show you that things change often and that what the service assignment picture looks like now...
