    Color Vision

It's complicated. A better application is always good to have, but it doesn't guarantee waivers. Remember that any recruited athlete with a medical problem (almost) automatically gets a waiver, so the available pool of medical waivers is not as large is it seems at first glance. It really...

AP Chem vs. Dual Enrollment Chem

If it helps at all, I was a dual-enrolled homeschool/CC student for my junior and senior years of high school. I found that the college classes offered exceptionally better lab experiences than the high school, and the study techniques that I learned prepared me very, very well for A's in both...

    USNA's new Cyber Security program

I will say with confidence that choice of major has essentially no impact on service selection. Directly commissioning IW/IP/Intel depends mainly upon who you know and what you have done to demonstrate aptitude in the field. For example, don't expect to be picked up for IW if you can't name a...

    SMC to USNA

Unless it's a huge life goal, I personally wouldn't. A year spent at The Citadel is expensive and USNA doesn't accept transfer credits so your friend would still be taking 15+ credit hours first semester of Plebe year. Plus, regarding career options, I met some Citadel guys at jump school and...

    USNA I-Day bag preference

The bag doesn't matter at all. I brought a gallon-size ziplock for my calculator and civilian shorts/T-shirt. At PPW (when your bag is returned) I gave the clothes to my parents and threw away the bag. Easy clean up.

    Application question

It's a simple question aimed at collecting demographic information. I think you'd be better off answering with a value; it's one more piece of data that they use to assess candidates, and the more data, the better.

Is taking AP U.S. Government and Politics helpful?

Definitely take the class and try to validate. US Constitution is one of those USNA classes in which it is unnecessarily demanding to secure an A. I was fortunate enough to validate (5 on AP Gov) but I watched my company-mates suffer.

    Plebe Ribbons

The red, yellow, white, and blue striped ribbon that most midshipmen wear on their left is the National Defense Medal, awarded for joining the armed forces during a time of active combat operations. The other two commonly worn are awards for Navy rifle and pistol marksmanship...

    Validations and Plebe Chemistry???

The chemistry professors are notoriously difficult at USNA so make sure your son is completely ready for Chemistry II (SC111 is Chem I, SC112 is Chem II). Just this past year, the final exam for Chemistry II was modified to include 30-40% material exclusively from Chemistry I. Also consider...

Do take note that many professors at USNA have been lobbying for an A+/A/A- system for years. Not sure if this will ever become reality, but beware.

My 4th of July certainly had no ice cream or BBQ. We watched 30 minutes of fireworks and then went inside and got PTed for an hour. We weren't allowed to sing Blue and Gold that night because we were the worst class in the history of the Naval Academy, and it took us two weeks to "pay back"...

    Service academy entrance question

Certainly. The academy is all about diversity and regional influence/representation, so the more obscure your location, the better your chances are for getting in.

Well wishes to 2017 plebe summer

20th company is cool. My friends told me that plebe training in 20 was not nearly as rough as in 21st.

For those unfamiliar with plebe summer, realize that for 7 straight weeks, you will not have a single second "to yourself." Even your 25 minutes of daily free time are crammed with laundry, showering, studying rates, preparing uniforms, and writing a "thought of the day," in addition to eating...

Well wishes to 2017 plebe summer

I don't know much about 18, which is typically a good thing. Pretty sure they live in the goat court with the rest of 4th batt.

Well wishes to 2017 plebe summer

Congratulations to those of you who will be joining us in a few days -- kick up some dust during Plebe summer and get ready to meet your new family on August 16th. -semper youngster-

    Company numbers

You'll receive it in the mail about 10-12 days before I-Day. As I recall, a lot of mids on SAF were accepting requests to look up candidates' information on MIDS, which they're probably not allowed to do. For those who don't know, your plebe summer platoon becomes your academic year company...

What are you allowed to bring in basic training for plebe summer?

Honestly, leave everything at home. No watches, no electric razors, no writing materials. You don't need clothing, either. Everything you'll need is issued to you. As for study materials, most validation tests were within the first 3 or 4 days, well before you get your first mail...

    Color vision

I was fortunate to receive a color vision medical waiver for USNA last spring. Like 1985 said, there are only a certain number of waivers that medical is willing to award, though exceptions are made. My roommate for plebe summer actually failed the color vision test on I-Day (no previous...
