    Wisdom Teeth!

My 2/C DS had his wisdom teeth removed at the dental clinic at USNA as a youngster, and he had no choice on the timing. Aside from the (not-insignificant) expense, going to a civilian oral surgeon will afford certain comforts like...sedation. The dental clinic at USNA prefers to do the...

    Athlete recruitment process?

DS is a current NMS player and I echo the sentiments expressed here. The most important thing is for you to want to attend the Naval Academy because of its mission, not for soccer. There are so many things out of your control - change of coaching staff, injury, other recruits in your position in...

Virginia MOC Nomination Updates -SAs Class of 2021

Yes - DS had 3 separate interviews in 2014 for Sen. Warner's panel. A friend's son had the same last year. In 2014 there were 70 interviews.

    USNA Appointment Acceptance

Congratulations on your appointment! It's wise to have a backup plan. DS accepted his appointment, was injured, had surgery and was cleared in April before I-Day. He had also applied to other schools (Plans B, C, etc.), accepted a spot at our flagship state university just in case he was turned...

    Athletic Recruitment

Anon2021, my DS was in a similar situation. He had been recruited (was told he was among the last two being considered for his position in his junior year, went to a recruits-only weekend), but ultimately the other player being considered got the offer at the end of junior year. That player...

    Half recruited

DS was a walk-on, similar circumstances to mccpa's account. Although he was on the coach's radar, he got no help in the admissions process. (It was pretty much, "let me know if you get in.") He received an LOA and was appointed with strong stats (35 ACT, top 5% of his class). I don't believe the...

    DQ for broken pinky?

I know what you're going through! Don't worry about the fixation surgery - it's often the best fix with the quickest recovery. And it won't necessarily keep him out of a service academy. I would advise doing it sooner rather than later, though. It was a bit nerve-wracking in March of senior...

    DQ for broken pinky?

Yes - DS has a screw in each wrist. The first required a remedial (it happened junior year, he was fully healed before DoDMERB), the second required a waiver (surgery in December of senior year, after his appointment was received). As soon as the doctor cleared him for unlimited activity in...

    Any Suggestions

I don't disagree at all, Maplerock, but in DS's BGO interview, his BGO thought DS was 1-dimensional *because* of his focus on his sport (played on a national top-10 club team in his sport, was all-state, all-conference, all-Met, MVP, etc.). He also had a 4.3 GPA and 35 ACT, was not recruited. To...

What are my chances at appointment?

Based on anecdotal evidence (DS's experience and my own observation), having a mid sibling has a higher correlation to gaining an appointment than having a parent who graduated, unless the parent has stars or some other extraordinary distinction. Your stats are good (grades, class rank, ECAs)...

How does your chosen major affect your future career?

Thanks, 18. The ones I know are doing or did Chem so I guess I generalized. How do they meet the requirements to apply to med school if they don't have the Chem/biochem courses? Do they take them as electives? In summer school? Genuinely curious. Thanks.

How does your chosen major affect your future career?

One more note to add - if you hope to get one if the dozen or so slots for med school, you'd major in Chemistry, because that's the only major that will offer the courses that satisfy med school prereqs.

    Plebes and Personal Music

DS had more than he could use (the number of weekends granted to all midshipmen, plus a weekend for making Dant's list, I think). He plays a fall sport that has a spring season and with having weekend duty and keeping his grades up (and the fact that we live less than an hour away so it's easy...

    DQ for broken pinky?

DS broke his wrists 3 times in 18 months, requiring surgery on both his wrists, including one in December of his senior year. He received a waiver (DQ'd after receiving his appointment for having had orthopedic surgery within last 6 months) after his orthopedic surgeon cleared him for...

    club soccer?

Is your DS in plebe summer now? Club soccer doesn't seem to get rolling until the brigade reforms - since most of the players are returning midshipmen. The coach is Rich Miranda (former varsity coach), and the players have a good time with him. They all want to be there, they aren't doing 30...

Quick Annapolis Visit - need suggestions

Drydock is the casual eatery Brovol referred to - it's in Dahlgren. I'd recommend peeking into Wesley Brown field house if you get a chance - great athletic facility that's open to anyone when teams don't have scheduled practices. Walk from Glenn Warner (soccer facility) to Farragut Field and...

Annapolis Restaurants/Where To Eat 2016/ I-Day CVW Visit Graduation PPW

Our youngster likes Bella Italia (Taylor Avenue, next to Naval Bagels). Simple Italian food - pastas, sandwiches, pizza. Not expensive. A good stop when you are returning them to the Yard via Gate 8. Also, Mission BBQ just opened in DTA (right on Dock St at Randall). While the mids get tired...

    Question about I Day

They will issue enough compression shorts to get him through the first week without a problem. They won't start their sport period until a week or so into PS, so if you send a care package with extra shorts on/soon after I Day, he should be fine. (Note that the mail gets very backed up during...
