What to do until EAD? AFROTC

My oldest took a job with his university right after graduation. They knew he was leaving for flight training 7 months later, but it worked well with their semester calendar. My second son got an unpaid internship at the Pentagon. It was a great experience. My daughter has a job lined up with...

    Type 2 AFROTC Questions

Take a close look at the University of St Thomas. With a Type 2 your total cost for 4 years, including room and board is $0. Det 410 consistently is ranked among the top AFROTC detachments. The Engineering Department is also ranked well nationally. The campus is located in a beautiful spot along...

What More Can I Do To Make Myself More Competitive? Tips?

I agree with sbservice about the need to practice the ACT. You have time to take the test a few more times and should make the most of it. There are many helpful options for study. Girl's State would be great if you get in. Both of my sons attended Boy's State and got a lot out of it. My...

    AFROTC SFT/LEAD Failure. What now?

The AFROTC Field Training Manual, section 6.2, states that "Cadets removed from leadership evaluation and development with prejudice will be det dropped (non-contract) or investigated for disenrollment (contract) once they return to the detachment." I do know a young man in my daughter's...

AFROTC Commissioning 2LT to AF or Reserve?

If you are AFROTC, your commissioning papers will say "Reserves". If your report date is 2, 4, 0r 10+ months later, you are not eligible for Tri-care, nor will you receive compensation. You are basically a civilian until you report for training and/or active duty. It is my understanding that...

Received the ROTC Scholarship - should son decline other scholarships?

You should check with the school. They all handle these external scholarships differently. My oldest went to college on a AFROTC scholarship and the school threw in room and board. Other scholarships went into his account and he could use the money for anything. My second son went to another...

Medically disqualified during AFROTC but want to serve

It can depend on the specific medication you were prescribed. It may be possible that a signed statement from the prescribing Dr. stating that you no longer need the medication could be helpful.

    AFROTC Scholarship status question

There is not a whole lot of communication from Holms at this point. Your DS should have a number of someone they can call with questions. I think once you have a scholarship, you are expected to direct questions to the Cadre at the detachment for their college.

    AFROTC Service Commitment

Be aware that certain career fields can increase your active duty commitment. For example, if you pursue a pilot slot and are chosen, you have a ten year commitment after all training is complete. Count on 12 or 13 years. Not a bad thing, but be aware.

Pentagon Intern room and board ideas

Will he have any kind of TAD/TDY orders? With those, he can stay in a BOQ (Navy says Bachelor Officer Quarters, but it can be many names depending on service, such as temporary lodging or billeting). There is such a thing as no-cost TAD/TDY orders, which gives him official status but no...

Pentagon Intern room and board ideas

My son has an internship at the Pentagon this summer and I am wondering if anyone has suggestions or ideas of places to stay for 10-14 weeks. He will have his commission (AFROTC) but will not yet be active duty.

AFROTC Scholarship Questions: College Majors and the PFA

You must get approval through the Cadre to switch majors. If you switch from tech to non tech, you may lose your scholarship. If you switch between tech majors, you must have a paper trail of approvals. I have heard a few stories about cadets who did not have all the necessary approvals in...

AFROTC room and board Penn State and others

Always call and check the details with the university you are considering. My oldest went to a Washington University in St. Louis on a type 1 AFROTC scholarship. The school tossed in free room and board, so my son paid $0. My second son received a AFROTC type 2 scholarship to the same university...

    FT Pay?

Travel should be covered by the Air Force. Your son need to work through the detachment to make this happen. I think they get paid while at FT. This may have changed with sequestration, however. There is no mandatory training during the following summer. There are a number of opportunities...

Worried about getting kicked out of AFROTC.

Have you met with your instructors or advisors? You mention that you are going to email your cadre instructor. If you want a chance to stay in, you have to be proactive. That means face to face meetings, among other things. I believe that building relationships with professors, cadre, other...

    NROTC & College Admissions

I would call the Detachment commander at the school where you got the scholarship. He/she will give the advice pertinent to that school. I know when we had questions like this about schools my sons and daughter got into, the Det Commanders were all very helpful. Just a suggestion, call and...
