HS senior with questions about rotc and army reserves

If you enlist now, and make it through MEPS without issues, you'll drill with a RSP unit until you either 1) finish HS and complete BCT and AIT, or 2) your circumstances change if awarded a ROTC scholarship. RSP is sort of being in limbo, and, at least according to my son, not an exciting or...

HS senior with questions about rotc and army reserves

I agree. 99 is a perfect score on the ASVAB. Combined with your high GPA, I'm sure your recruiter is doing handstands. My son is enlisted Army National Guard, and enrolled in college/ROTC, so perhaps a similar path as you are considering. Regarding length of service - time served in the...

    Looking for a great book.

'In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin' by Erik Larson. True story about William E. Dodd - the U.S. ambassador to Germany in 1933 that reads like a suspense novel. I read 'Once A Eagle' by Anton Myrer. Not a light read for sure, but well worth it!

Is there a way out of ROTC/National Guard?

Hello. My son is enlisted National Guard and planning to go into college/ROTC. My understanding is that if, at any point, he quit college/ROTC and/or failed to graduate/commission thru ROTC, he is obligated to fulfill his Guard enlistment contract.

Zero week started today for my AROTC son. Who else?

My son is enlisted Army National Guard and currently completing his AIT at Fort Sill. He is a Minuteman Scholarship recipient and already enrolled in ROTC/college. Unfortunately, classes started at his college last week, and he won't be back from AIT until the end of August. So he's missing the...

The classic Southern lady's take down just popped to mind - "Why bless your heart!" - lol! Your mom sounds awesome!

Wear Uniform to High School Honor Awards Ceremony?

Okay, problem solved. I contacted the recruiter. He said to wear the dress uniform. This is an evening ceremony, not during school hours. Thank you all for your input.

Wear Uniform to High School Honor Awards Ceremony?

Just to be clear - the award ceremony is held the day before graduation. It is an entirely separate event. I did ask the guidance counselor about dress code. She thought wearing his uniform would be "very cool!" Then again, I think she's all of 22 years old - lol! The surprise is when she told...

Wear Uniform to High School Honor Awards Ceremony?

So, my son, who is enlisted in the National Guard, is a graduating high school senior. At the High School's Honor Award Ceremony (which is held the day before graduation) he will be given recognition as a recipient of the Minuteman ROTC Scholarship. One of the local Guard recruiters will be...

Atheist Groups Warns Florida Schools to Comply with New Pledge of Allegiance Law - Or Else

Thanks to having recently finished reading "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson, I'll raise my hand here.... The Pledge of Allegiance was written for the purpose of promoting the 1893 Chicago World Fair. The dedication of the World Fair coincided with the anniversary of Columbus...

Getting an Active Commission through Split Ops

Also, Minuteman Scholarship recipients cannot go Active Duty.

Getting an Active Commission through Split Ops

My son is Army National Guard Split Op and enrolled to start a (non-military) college and ROTC in the fall. Yes, he could apply for a national ROTC scholarship like anyone else. He will become eligible for SMP benefits if/when he is contracted into ROTC. At that point, he would still be...

Citadel investigates cadets wearing pillowcases on heads

It was pointed out in the statement by The Citadel Minority Alumni Association that this is not the first, second or third time problems like this have occurred. I imagine, as alumni, they have both loyalty and insight into the inner-workings of the institution, as opposed to uninformed opinions...

Citadel investigates cadets wearing pillowcases on heads

Yes, it is creepy. The KKK was responsible for enforcing Jim Crow laws in the South. Jim Crow was de facto slavery, which means the violent suppression of black people continued long after the end of the Civil War. During that time, about 4000 lynching that took place, primarily in the Southern...

Citadel investigates cadets wearing pillowcases on heads

Fwiw, I don't think the kids involved should be expelled or horse-whipped or otherwise harshly reprimanded. There is no indication they were causing any physical harm to anyone. They are just kids who used poor judgment, and who among us hasn't? The problem as I see it, is even just suspension...

Citadel investigates cadets wearing pillowcases on heads

I think The Citadel Minority Alumni Association said it best. In context of the institution's history, it would be a disservice to all to shrug this off as a misguided prank.

Citadel investigates cadets wearing pillowcases on heads

Presumably the cadets involved shared it with someone outside the school. How else would it have ended up on Facebook? And yes, it is a manifestation of systemic racism when these kids dressed in white robes and masks and found it amusing or appropriate in any way, shape or form. In South...

Citadel investigates cadets wearing pillowcases on heads

Jesus. This - only 6 months after the killings at the black Emanuel Baptist Church, which is 2 miles down the road from The Citadel. And then to post a picture on Facebook??? I guess the admission process can pre-select on GPA, physical fitness and extra-curricular activities, but not on...

Ben Carson admits fabricating West Point scholarship

Well - I've looked at a variety of media sources. And here is what I think. The refugee crisis IS an American crisis. It may not seem that way to everyday Americans, because only 1 percent serve in the military, as I know you all know. Most Americans won't be directly affected if we decide to...
