I've heard some interesting ghost stories involving Stonewall Jackson checking in on VMI cadets while on guard duty, etc. Also heard Washington and Lee and various historic locations in Lexington have an abundance of ghost stories!

VT has a wide variety of scholarship options and the alumni bonds are very tight. The corps of cadets within a large student body provides opportunities not available at other SMCs... Another point for scholarships is that VT has "regional" scholarships in and out of state which benefit...

Read it on a forum about honor problems at the academies and it was also in a Roanoke Times article on VMI's Honor Code. Seems the Richmond Times Dispatch did an article on VMI's system as well. That said, Virginia Tech had a very similar and stringent honor code at one point and today VTCC...

That's true, good point--I heard they changed that because two cadets waiting for the walk of shame and the drum out hung themselves in the chapel... Definitely an interesting place... and not for everyone!

Another reason there may be a somewhat "interesting" response when one mentions VMI is the Honor Code. It is VERY unique at VMI. Some call it barbaric that they still do a "drum out" ceremony at 2AM and mark the "rolled" cadet's face in black marker with an X in all the yearbooks on post...

Great points from AJC with regard to Norwich. Conrack's stats about the citadel are not quite accurate (along with other comments), as the school is still evaluating its applicants. When the process is complete, the acceptance rate for those desiring to be in the corps of cadets at the citadel...

Your drive to attend VMI is a big plus and you should definitely convey that to the admissions office. I would als0 add that your school being very competitive and among the best in Florida may be of assistance as well. Best of Luck to you!

Florida, In the order of toughest acceptance rates: VMI --53% Norwich--65.7% Citadel--75.5% So just scratching the surface I'd say your chances of acceptance to VMI are tough... However, Norwich or Citadel may be good options for you. I'd also look at North Georgia, Texas A&M, and Virginia Tech...
