    Running During BCT

Let me put it to you this way... "Everywhere I went... I... Was... Running!!!"... (or marching). If you're running 5 days out of the week now, you'll be fine. It's usually formation running and that is usually fairly slow.

    Packages sent to cadets

Early and often. Just have them send the package a week or so before A-day. And, from my recollection, if the post office holds packages for basics, cadre won't go digging to find out who received a package. But, make sure your girlfriend sends you lots of love letters with hearts and smelly...

Life in Active Duty (ask a Captain anything)

Thanks Chief. I appreciate your kind words. Thanks for your service and you sound like a Chief we need back on AD. ;) Just out of curiosity, what Guard unit is your son a part of?

    Academy tour

What time did you go? Did you see the AC-130 flyover?

    Academy tour

And a little birdie told me there will be a 2 ship of C-17s fly over on Sat and another on Sunday. ;) I may be a little biased, as well.

    No, and Yes.

    Failed my final?

No, you won't get your acceptance rescinded for failing a final. Your final grade is what goes on the transcript and is subsequently what USAFA sees. And, I'm pretty sure that since you are already accepted, they don't go back and look at final grades after the fact. I think you're fine.

    AFSC 21AX Advice

That's a great idea and you already have foresight that many firsties don't even have. I am not a MX officer, but I can tell you that you rarely turn a wrench. Unless you want to do some type of maintenance job on the outside, it doesn't matter what your major is. And pretty much anywhere...

Life in Active Duty (ask a Captain anything)

Don't worry, there was still Air Conditioning... although it was hit or miss. ha!

Dorms and the Air Force Academy

Given the state that USAFA resides, I would say it's a fair question to ask if there are drug tests. Since it is legal, why would it be so bad if he wanted to smoke some marijuana (obviously assuming he isn't in the military--a tidbit he probably didn't know either)? No need to cast stones to...

Life in Active Duty (ask a Captain anything)

Buffalo might have a little better gouge on what the current ops tempo and deployment lifestyle is like, but for me (2010-2013), we started out with 120 day deployments and by the time I left, we were down to 60 day deployments. It also depends on what C-17 base you are at. Charleston was very...

Life in Active Duty (ask a Captain anything)

A typical day really depends on a lot of things, most notably AFSC, flying schedule, the type of person (some like to show up really early and leave a little sooner), supervisor requirements, etc. I can tell you how a typical day for a pilot is at an AETC base, where I'm currently at, in the...

    Passport?

No need to bring a passport to I-day. I don't think I even knew what a passport was on I-day. You will eventually get a passport through USAFA.

    Bringing siblings to parents' weekend?

Absolutely bring their siblings! In fact, the other cadets are counting on it.

Life in Active Duty (ask a Captain anything)

It definitely does have good perspective, and there should be TONS of info on the RPA subject. Just know the difference between good info and bitterness. It is definitely a growing industry and she would do well on the outside with it. And as far as AF career goes, its a good community if she...

    Passenger Transport AFSC

Those assignments are controlled tours and are 2-4 years long. They do drop them out of UPT, with an MWS follow-on. And yes, they are typically filled by heavy guys. But, I don't think it's totally unheard of to have a fighter guy transition. That is, if AFPC will release him to cross-flow.

    Parent's Weekend

She can stay in the dorms with you, just bring her on up.... jk jk.. don't do that. But, I like where your head is at, thinking about the boo before you're even at USAFA. Good luck with the long distance, it ain't easy.

Life in Active Duty (ask a Captain anything)

I think AFrpaso answered your question, but I will add that if you take a peek into http://www.flyingsquadron.com/forums/ you will see many threads and posts on RPAs. That is a big community so keep in mind that you will find good and bad info. Some are open minded while some are so cynical...

Life in Active Duty (ask a Captain anything)

AFrpaso has great insight that I can't afford. However, I can tell you from a "big picture" look at the RPA community, they just can't fill the slots quick enough. Whether we like it or not, RPAs are the future of any kind of engagement. So, your DD is going into a career field that is...

Life in Active Duty (ask a Captain anything)

While I still stand by my statement that appointees and cadets shouldn't be too focused on the future (graduation is first), I think it is important to at least have an idea of what you're getting yourself into. And, I'm not here to recruit for the AF. As you can tell, I will tell it like I...
