Sending my boy to USAFA... A Mothers Story

VaMom, it was hard not to tell him on Doolie Day In calls. We were so excited. Then there were countless times when I nearly told him in my letters but managed to keep it a secret. It was a great time for all of us. It's really a personal decision for each family whether to go to I Day and/or...

Sending my boy to USAFA... A Mothers Story

I can absolutely relate to VaMom2013. My son is also a C3C. I did not go to I Day; my husband went and I said good-bye in Austin. It was terribly hard but it was the right decision for our family. We wrote letters every day during basic and our son truly appreciated that connection to home. He...

    Acceptance Day - Box

Regarding letters from home during Beast...I recommend that you and family members number your letters from home because basics will often receive a stack of letters all at once and it helps them to know which order they arrived. Just a thought. :)

    arrival

Good grief! I thought I had handled these emotions! :) My son is a C3C and I'm tearing up remembering how it felt to say good-bye to him at the airport in Austin, TX when he and my husband made the trip to CO for I-Day 2 years ago...It's such an incredible experience for the whole family! It's...

    One day left until Recognition...

Wow! Hard to believe that a year has passed so quickly and my C3C was in the thick of Recognition this time last year....I was a nervous wreck for him! Wishing all the C4C's the best of luck! We're very proud of your hard work!

    Wisdom Teeth

My son was supposed to have his wisdom teeth removed last month at USAFA but they attempted to do the procedure with conscious sedation (valium) and he had a VERY bad reaction. They tried twice to no avail. He is now having them removed tomorrow (Feb. 2) at the base hospital under general...

You might not expect this at USAFA

Parents should be prepared to let their 4 degrees make their own decisions - they are adults now. There will be all sorts of things that come along that first year (travel arrangements, medical decisions, relationship issues, money management issues, etc.) and your DS/DD needs to learn to make...

    Looking for different perspectives--help

Band Directors... What is it with band directors??? Do they go to special training to act this way? Our son is at USAFA (2013) and he had an eerily similar experience with the band director when he decided to leave band at the end of 11th grade. The band director did not care, understand, or...

Car insurance for your cadet - save some $$$

We had a very similar situation with State Farm in Austin, TX. Our agent insisted that we had to keep our son on our policy last year and that if we took him off then we'd have to reinstate him each time he's home, yada, yada, yada. None of that was accurate. We have since insisted on having him...

    Documentary Filming-Cobra's

aa5252000, I was thinking along the same lines. It may be very therapeutic to have opportunities to vocalize how the basics are feeling, etc. (something none of the other basics really get to do except in the dark of night in hushed tones with those immediately within earshot or in a letter...

    1st dumb parent question

Texasrocks, you will really appreciate the pictures, updates, etc. from Web Guy. He has amazing access to the basics all summer. Last year he posted the daily bct schedules a day ahead of time but was asked not to do that any more (not sure why). Now he posts the daily schedule after the...

    Cellular Service at USAFA

It is correct that AT&T offers 15% military discount if your cadet is on his/her own plan. The discount, to the best of my knowledge, cannot be applied to a family plan on which the cadet is just one of several users. A quick call to AT&T (or any carrier you are considering) can confirm this...

    Cellular Service at USAFA

My son has AT&T and an iPhone and has never had any trouble with connection, dropped calls, etc. Remember, though, you won't have access to your phone for quite a while - possibly mid fall semester.

    1st dumb parent question

I'd like to add to the OP (original poster) that NO question is a dumb question. We were all in your shoes at one time and had the same or dumber (is that a word???) questions. I also highly recommend spending the money to buy an AOG membership so you can see pictures and videos of your basic...

    Stationery/Letters During Beast

Letters were a HUGE comfort to our son last summer during basic. We mailed the first letter on I-Day and mailed one every day for the whole summer. Many of the letters were quite short but still gave us a chance to tell him about our day and keep him up to speed on what was happening at home...

    Universal Acceptance

Last year our son was offered appointments to USAFA, USNA and USMA. He accepted USAFA and just finished his 4* year. It's a great journey!

    Sir/Ma'am?

Blackwing1, I just want to commend you on the way you have received all of the advice and opinions on this thread. You handled it exactly the right way. You listened, you learned and now you are going to act. Way to go and best of luck to you!

    Change of clothes?

Absolutely make sure you have access to a cell phone (your own or borrowed) if it will be DDI this summer. The phone banks are loud and very difficult to carry on a conversation. You can hear the folks around you talking and there are constant announcements over the PA system for cadets to pick...

    Preparing for BCT
