It sounds like Turbotax is taking you down the path for a Qualifying Relative. The Qualifying Relative test compares their gross income for the year against $4050. The Qualifying child test does not.

    W2 form for Cadets

I don't think anybody would say the tax code necessarily makes sense. Congress changed tax code some years ago that raises questions regarding Service Acadamy current interpretations.

    W2 form for Cadets

Many CPA's who are willing to go to bat for their clients have disagreed with the Service Academy interpretation. Even the Service Academies state in their letter its not the IRS's official position.

He got in to Mypay! Someone showed him how to use his smart card to gain access. Thanks to everyone for their help!

    W2 form for Cadets

He definitely has problems logging on. It says to enter the temporary password "which was provided". I guess he will have to pay a visit to the Harmon Hall office or better yet I will give him the phone number you graciously provided.

    W2 form for Cadets

He is in the middle of Recognition and it sounds like he has absolutely no time but I will suggest the Pay Office and the SS#/temp PW. Thanks for the help.

    W2 form for Cadets

The only option to create an account requires a temp password that he never received. I told him to ask a c3c - somebody has to know.

    W2 form for Cadets

I told him about mypay.dfas.mil and he had no idea what that was. He evidently never got the temp password to gain access for the first time.

    W2 form for Cadets

My DS has not received his W2 form in the mail and has no idea where to get it. He has asked around and he says everyone is as clueless as him. Where does he get his W2 from?

    Cadet Taxes - Form 8880

I want to comply with tax law, but I would trust the interpretation of the IRS over the interpretation of the USAFA. If this ever got audited, I believe the decision would be favorable based on the previously provided supportive link directly from the IRS. The USAFA may not be ELIGIBLE FOR...

    Cadet Taxes - Form 8880

I know this is an old thread but I seem to have found some contradiction at irs.gov which says the USAFA is and eligibile institution for the American Oportunity Tax Credit. Question #18 at the IRS link below gives another link which shows the USAFA is accredited for this tax credit...

Thank you for the tips. We already signed up w/ USAA thanks to this forum so at least we are 1/2 way there.

    Life Insurance

I'm getting the idea it's necessary to call USAA when signing up for Cadet renter's insurance because on-line I don't see anything that looks like it's designed just for the SA's.

    Tax info

The information packet we got from the USAFA indicates the parent's support gets compared to TOTAL support provided to the Cadet and it specifically says to include fair value of food, lodging, medical care, education and other services furnished by USAFA. This contradicts the IRS Pub 501...

    Tax info

I must admit, it's still confusing. Line 23 only gets used (per line 22) if the child needs to be tested as a "qualified relative". If the child meets "other tests to be a qualifying child" you don't look at line 23 and then would not count the Academy's support. I hate the confusing tax...

    Tax info

I dug into this and found IRS Publication 501, Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information In Worksheet 2 there is a support test for a "Qualifying Child" to determine if they are considered a dependent. The kicker seems to be at line 23 of the worksheet: Did You Provide More...

Excellent. Thanks ktnatalk for the information slide. This lines up with what I have generally read.

    Tax info

Thanks for clarifying. Good point. Correct me if I am wrong but aren't we only discussing the tax implication for the Cadet's first year? All other years there is no dispute that they are not dependents of the parent.

    Investing while at the Academy

How long can you take to repay the loan? So your son essentially took a $35K 0% interest loan, invested all of it and then payed it back with future paycheck dollars.
