My son said that he was interested which surprised me.....he passed on his USMMA appointment to go to a traditional 4 year school (having received TWEs from USAFA and USMA).

My son was not successful in attaining an appointment to USMA. He moved on to Plan B. Out of nowhere he received an email stating that he had been awarded a four-year ROTC scholarship. Does anyone have any experience with this happening to their son/daughter?

In retrospect, I would have benefitted from having an extra of (almost) everything. An extra cap, extra set of parade belts, extra white gloves, extra pair of trousers, some pieces of field gear, BDU top/bottom (or whatever they are called now, ACU?). Four years is a long time for the items...
