Obviously they get this from being what has been described as a 3Q candidate (physical, medical, and academic), but how do you actually find out if you received an LOA? Status update in the portal, letter in the mail, email from admissions, Ed McMahon at your door with balloons?

Experienced the same thing. Status changed to "Pending" on Wednesday like many others. Then today status changed from Pending to Incomplete Closed. Basically waiting for DODMERB results to show up. Just have to hurry up and wait.
