100s night is THIS WEEK!!

May be wrong, will accept it, but I would think this chance of staying at the AFA on casual with a UPT slot would equate to rare.

It's not really that rare. If I remember correctly there were 55 or so 2011 grads who did their casual at USAFA before going to their UPT base. If you had a UPT start date after January, requested USAFA for casual, and one of the instructors had a need for an assistant, you got to stay at USAFA for first semester on casual. Several of our son's friends were there and when son was in Pueblo for IFS he would head up to COS for the weekend to see them.

Place oil in the bottom of the pot. Add jalapenos and juice too. Stir until they are lightly golden brown. Do not brown them too much because they will burn and add a nasty taste. Add popcorn to pop old fashion way. Move the pot often so jalapenos keep getting cooked.

When done. Pour it all out in a large bowl and toss with season salt and red pepper.
It is a trial and error method.
Interesting. My flight used about 3/4 cup of oil, 3/4 cup of sliced jalapenos drained of juice, let them just start to brown, then added a 1-1.5 cups of un-popped corn. Then, added buttery-popcorn salt afterwords. Basically, it was moderately-spicy movie theater style corn. It seemed to be a crowd favorite in the squadron, although another flight figured out how to make it fluffier before I left...yes, it was an unofficial competition!

T-6s are a land unto themselves.

When we attended the Admission's Seminar at Shreveport just prior to the Bowl Game about a year ago, several of the new 2nd Lt's who we met there and who were part of the presentation were in casual assigned to the Academy and awaiting their UPT slots. Sharp kids!

Fencersmother - Came back tonight just to see where the boys were assigned. Can't wait to find out !

They know as they are back in the dorms (our son rooms with a senior)!

One son got Vance, with a start date of 9/19.

The other got... Pensacola Naval Air station! No kidding!

My son called. He got Columbus Mississippi. (Actually was his choice). He also got the first start date of August. Almost no casual. That's actually really good, because he'll be TDY to Pueblo Colorado and he'll get to come up to a couple home football games and we'll get to see him.

Of course this all hinges on whether or not he gets his grad school slot. He's got 2 possibilities, but won't find out for another couple weeks. If he gets grad school, he'll still get Columbus; just that he'll postpone until he graduates grad school. But at least he got the base he wanted.

Son's roommate also got Columbus. Do the cadets have any input on their start dates?

I asked my son if he chose the start date. He said no. He simply got to choose the bases. He said he was shocked that he got in the first class schedule for the class of 2012. A couple graduates football teammates from 2011, had to wait much longer. Another grad from 2009, didn't go to columbus, had to wait almost an entire year before starting UPT. Not sure what they base the start date on. Not sure if it has anything to do with OPA/GPA/Class Rank/etc... I can honestly say; I have no idea. My son doesn't know either. (At least not at this time). I'm sure he'll find out. It might simply be luck of the draw.

Yes, my son said there were still some graduates from last May still on casual status at the Academy. I knew in the past the pipeline for UPT was backed up but I thought they had relieved alot of that backup. Son's roommate's start date at Columbus is October. When my nephew graduated from Texas A&M in May 2006, he was on casual duty at A&M almost 9 months before he started UPT at ENJJPT at Sheppard. I don't think that rating in my nephew's case would have determined start date as he had outstanding stats at A&M and ended up finishing at the top of his ENJJPT class.

My son who got Pensacola is just in shock, I think. It is some kind of paradise from the looks of things - beaches, bikinis, and airplaines; what else does a young man need? - but it's NAVY - or navy-ish. He doesn't start till January.

I asked him if hanging out on Florida's beaches for six months would really be all that terrible? haha

The shocking thing I learned last night: They can TRADE! So apparently, already, there were all kinds of swaps taking place. I don't know if mine will join in that bruhaha or not.

Not sure I'd ever trade Pensacola for Oklahoma! haha

He's a lucky guy DON'T trade! I live 3 hours from P'Cola and I go on down every chance I get and stay at the Beach Cabins at the NAS, they're right below the "Haunted" Lighthouse on the beach by the Navy Lodge and come with everything you need - very reasonable rates too! The Flora Bama has to be experienced at least once as well.

Definitely try them when you visit. Also, get to know Joe Patti's and Maria's Seafood for a massive selection of rock bottom priced seafood, the Coffee Cup, and Jerry's Drive Inn, all part of Old P'Cola. The buffet breakfast at the golf course on Sundays is a deal and the Mustin O Club has a great eatery in it as well. Best of all, the National Naval Aviation Museum is located there and it's a must see.

Tell him to have fun and be careful.

Let's face it for the AF the majority of the UPT bases are in places you would never elect to visit. This is also true for AD bases like Cannon, Mt Home or SJAFB.

I have heard both sides of the fence why some would trade Pensacola for Oklahoma. It always comes down to the fact that Pensacola is a jt training base, and bit just AF. Some say it is great exposure and some say there is The DOD way, the Navy way and the AF way to train.

Happy for you fencer, but man I hope you sign up for a credit card that gives you great sky miles because you will be going different ways all the time. I also hope that one has a longer casual status than the other so you can attend both of their UPT graduation dates.

Oklahoma is tornado alley, but Pensacola is hurricanes. Both will have weather issues to deal with, which can delay graduations.

Raimius I also use the popcorn salt, but it is not a necessity for me just does make it tastes a slight bit better. As far as the amount of jalapenos I add, I add enough to cover the bottom of the pot in a single layer. The true test is my nose needs to start burning within 30 secs. and our kids screaming "Mom are you making combat corn?" to know if I have enough in, if I don't have both of those issues, than I add more.

The real trick is the jalapenos...don't fry them long enough they are soggy and as I said too long than they are charcoal. It has to be just the right brown before you add the popcorn.

Also, I am sure you guys are like squadrons, buying the Costco size can of jalapenos. I only buy the grocery store size...usually lasts for about 4 pots of popcorn.

Congrats to all now the sigh of relief for many can start!
