100s night is THIS WEEK!!

ENJJPT is Euro Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training. It is competitive to get ENJJPT from a selection process.

ENJJPT = Euro Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training; there are cadets in this UPT class from other countries besides the U.S.A.; used to be they graduated just fighter jets and bombers; not always the case but still predominantly the graduates get fighters or bombers; it is at Sheppard AFB in gorgeous (not!) Wichita Falls, TX which is about 2 hours NW of Fort Worth, TX; I believe everyone in ENJJPT trains in the second phase of UPT on T-38s. BTW - I am not a Mom that just happens to know this randomly (ha). I only really know it because our nephew did his training here. Helps to have a nephew that is 7 years ahead of our son as we know the steps from graduation to where our nephew is now. Of course, our son still thinks his idea job would be to fly AF combat rescue helos - not a whole lot of those in the AF- so we will see how that plays out over the next few years.

My son graduated in 2011 and asked for casual status at USAFA. He received that and also worked in one of the departments that he asked for. He started IFS in early January and is packing up next week and heading to Vance. He will finally start UPT in March. There were lots of 2011 casual LT's at USAFA this past year. Lots of cadets swapped after 100's night. Nothing is ever set in stone either. My son and his roommate gallivanted around Europe during their graduation leave and the roommate got diverted from Columbus to Whiting while he was gone overseas. He was not a happy camper about that. No good reason was given for the divert and he could not get it changed back. He hasn't started at Whiting yet either.

my son said his training base was in Mexico....well it's Del Rio, TX (Laughlin AFB)
right on the border
Anyone else going there?

he may just be in for a trade

Adios muchachos!
Tell him not to fly on the left side of the river when inbound from the MOAs...
One of my IPs had to ask ATC for a new vector to "remain in national airspace." :shake:

I'm pretty sure one of my form buddies flew us on the wrong side for a minute before figuring it out.

Also, I am sure you guys are like squadrons, buying the Costco size can of jalapenos. I only buy the grocery store size...usually lasts for about 4 pots of popcorn.
50lb bag of popcorn should last around a month or so...

Pima, I'm expecting loads of combat corn when I come see you in May! Make with lots of love! :D

Congrats to all of the Firsties on their base assignments! It is so much fun to hear about where everyone is going.

stvblm - Hearty congrats to your son for ENJJPT. Currently there are only 33 slots per year, so he definitely impressed someone.

As far as the question of how UPT start dates are decided: I've been told that it is not a specific formula, but they first try to give as many people their choice of base. This is possible up to a point, since they also try to distribute the OPA/order of merit evenly between the bases. Then they also assign UPT start dates in a way that distributes the OPA throughout each of the UPT classes. You wouldn't want all of the top 20 2Lts in OPA to be assigned to the same UPT class where they would be in competition with each other for the one or two fighter/bomber slots available to their class. That is why it may seem to be a random placing of start dates where someone much higher in OPA gets a start date 6 months after someone who ranked in the bottom 50%.

There are lots of reasons why our son wanted to get assigned to 'Hell Rio" a/k/a Laughlin AFB. It was actually his second choice after Sheppard. One reason is that it has the highest amount of flying days of any of the UPT choices. Very rarely is the weather severe enough to ground the planes. Since our son has been there they have only been grounded a few days due to high winds. That is important when trying to avoid delays in graduation date. He has also found that the location is really what you make of it. Del Rio has Lake Amistad for boating, fishing, and swimming. There are also 5 large tracts of land both on and off the base that the base hunting club leases for hunting. There are opportunities for white-tail, mule deer and boar. Our son and his roommates have had a lot of fun during casual. Once UPT starts there is very little time to do much so the location becomes even less important according to him.

One thing to be prepared for is changes in their start date. Our son lives with three other USAFA grads for UPT. All four were supposed to be in the same class, but ended up spread throughout three different classes. Once they are about two weeks prior to their start date they are locked in for that class. That is when we finally made hotel reservations to go visit him. We didn't want to have to change them.

Congrats all ! Those going to Columbus will have the opportunity to frequent Hank's #1 Championship Barbeque. Starksville (Miss St. Univ), Tuscaloosa, and Pensacola are common destinations during casual, but once UPT starts, location becomes a non-issue as the focus shifts to flying.

If the Academy makes all that effort to keep bases/classes equal, then wouldn't allowing the swapping of bases just mess all that up?

yes. There are quite a few questions that those going to pilot training have about the assignment of bases/start dates.. short answer: no one knows.

It shocked me that trading is allowed. Are there "enhanced" swaps? As in:

"I'll trade you my Sept start at Del Rio for your March start at Pensacola, plus your ipod" or

"I'll trade you Vance for Edwards, plus six months of car payments?"

I don't think that the trading impacts anything much because it isn't really a large amount. I asked son last night and he only knew of 5 people who had traded bases. Remember for a trade to take place, you have to have someone willing to give up a base that another person wants, and willing take the base that the other person didn't want. Also, the trades must be approved, and that doesn't always happen.

fencersmother, I am sure if there were any 'enhancements' to a trade, the details of those enhancements would be kept between the two parties involved.

Well, I just wish someone who is at Wright/pat would tell me:

Are there really aliens in Hangar 18?

Any word on what happened to your senior cadets' rooms this weekend?!? I forgot my junior cadet lives with a senior - yikes! Hope he moved his valuables/electronics out!

If he goes casual it will most likely be at his UPT base and not the AFA!

May be wrong, will accept it, but I would think this chance of staying at the AFA on casual with a UPT slot would equate to rare.

Nope, I get to keep him here with me until March! Getting casual at USAFA is pretty common, but the future Lt needs to find a job. Fencersmother's son and my bf was offered three, so it'll work out as long as the Comm approves casual in general for the class of '12. Finally, a place to experiment all of the foods I didn't want to embarass myself with at my sponsors'! :thumb:

J Nordic: are we talking about the kid who wouldn't eat RICE until he was about 18? Or toast, with butter? lol

PIMA: I think there were quite a few cadets who got casual status at USAFA before they go off to UPT.

Casual for 9-10 months seems so boring. You graduate from the academy and you want to get on with your life. But instead, you hang around doing make work. I understand that they can't start everyone's pilot training in August, and I'm not complaining. (I think I know the military and why they do things. LOL). Just pointing out that casual isn't all that it's cracked up to be. My son was glad that his pilot training was the first session. It was to start in August. He was even going to be in Pueblo doing initial training and was going to make it up to the academy for the parent's weekend opening day football game and Thudgate.

The plans have since changed, but until then, he was so glad that he didn't have to do too much casual. A month or two is one thing, but we've had quite a few friends who left the academy and had 6+ months of casual. It isn't all that great.
