    16th Annual Marine Environmental Symposium

    Date(s): April 23 - 24, 2010

On the weekend of April 23rd and 24th Massachusetts Maritime Academy will host the 16th annual High School Environmental Symposium. And according to symposium founder and Executive Director, Chris Ryan, the 16th edition is shaping up to be the BEST ever!

On Friday night, April 23rd, students and teachers will have the opportunity to hear from one of the world’s foremost authorities on the preservation of whales – Pat Romage, from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)! Securing Mr. Romage is, according to Symposium Director Ryan, “A wonderful opportunity for students and teachers to hear about the compelling work done by IFAW to save whales from commercial fishing.”

On Saturday, April 24th, the symposium will feature a number of other distinguished guests including Dr. John Chisholm, one the country’s leading authorities on sharks! A Marine Biologist from Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, Dr. Chisholm spent this past summer with Dr. Greg Skomal chasing great white sharks around Nauset Beach on the Cape…where the great whits’s were apparently chasing grey seals, which have grown in huge numbers over the years.

Later in the day, symposium participants are in for a real treat... when Woods Hole Oceanographic senior scientist – Dr. Darlene Ketten, delivers her lecture on “How man made noise actually effects marine animals.” She also is a specialist in forensic analyses on the heads and necks of stranded marine animals… All to make sure our fragile marine animal population remains healthy!

Not only will there be a number of other exciting hands-on workshops and guest lecturers throughout the weekend but symposium participants will have the opportunity to spend the evening aboard MMA’s 550’ training ship Kennedy!

This year, celebrate 40 years of Earth Day your way... at MMA!
