I noticed today that many of the forms went live in the portal. I had heard on this forum that there was a 2,000 dollar deposit that would be put down to help with the upfront costs, however, we could have some sort loan, or have it taken out of our cadet pay if we were unable to afford it at this time.

"A fourth class Cadet (freshman) incurs expenses of approximately $12,200 during the first year at West Point. To help a Cadet meet these expenses, a Cadet earns a monthly paycheck and receives a $8,400 pay advance. This pay advance is necessary since Cadet expenses accrue faster than Cadet pay during the fi rst few months at the Academy. Therefore, you are required to make a nonrefundable deposit before arriving at the Military Academy. This Cadet account is NOT the same as your personal checking account. The deposit required for the Class of 2019 is $2,000. Candidates selected for attendance at West Point should send the deposit prior to 13 June 2015"

However the instructions to appointees says it is required up front. My family isn't exactly in the most pristine financial condition that we are able to pull 2,000 dollars out to make the payment, and as a college freshman, I am ineligible for many of the scholarships available to high school seniors (not to mention deadlines have passed on many of them and many are specified for tuition or room/board) Obviously, I will go searching for scholarships and other means to pay for the deposit, but my question to the forum is, what have others done in the past to deal with this?

    http://www.usma.edu/parents/siteassets/treasurer mission web page input 2012 (1).pdf

Any newly arriving cadet who cannot meet the requirement of the Initial Deposit will have their end of month pay that the cadet receives reduced by $100 until their cadet account is in line with the rest of their class. It is not necessary to inform the Treasurer that the Initial Deposit cannot be met. The Treasurer will automatically take action the second month a cadet get paid to insure their cadet account will be in line with the rest of their class.

Another option would be to look for a part time job now and save what you can. You may need to do this anyway as you'll need to purchase some items (like boots and shoes, a watch to use during beast...) before leaving for WP.

When you have walking privileges, you can go into Highland Falls and eat pizza, McDonalds, sushi, etc. You can ski on West Point's slope in the winter. You can shop at the PX and Commissary. Some cadets get Netflix.

Looking at the $27,000 of expenses incurred in 4 years, what does that leave left over for personal checking, about $20,000 total?
