$2000 Deposit

Like people have said, scholarships. But also, and I know this may not apply to you, but you could ask for basically donations. For example, two years ago I went with a few people from my AFJROTC unit to the Air Force Academy. Total cost for each cadet was $360. Between two organizations, I was able to get all I needed plus some for souvenirs. Also, last summer I went to a leadership conference costing $2500 plus airfare. Between different local groups I was able to raise almost $1000 in a relatively short time period. Now as I said, this may not apply to everyone seeing as I come from a small town where many of these people have known me since I was born. However it is always worth a shot. =]

Oh. Haha. Like friends and family helping out  Sounds nice

I dont know. I'd rather rely on scholarships...asking your parents for it seems like too much after all they've done for you  but yeah, thanks for the idea. Maybe I'll ask my grandparents

Yea, I hate asking people for money. It just feels wrong.

Everyone keeps throwing out scholarships, but what scholarship will only cover 2-3 thousand dollars and not even be for admission? Would scholarships pay for expenses? And what if you recieve a scholarship for more than what you need, where does that money go?

Did you check out the link coffeecup posted on the first page of this thread? You should check it out, it answers some of those questions.

There are many scholarships that are not limited to tuition. They money is yours to cover college expenses at your discretion.

I won a $1,000 scholarship by writing an essay and was given a check.

Holy cow! $2000???? First time I ever heard anything like this...is there a specific reason why an ENROLLMENT DEPOSIT is so expensive? A civilian college I got into has a $200 deposit :confused: Whats the reason for this spectacularly high cost?

I quote from the Instructions for Applicants Offered Admission:

"At West Point cadets are not charged for tuition, room, board, medical and dental expenses. Cadets are responsible for certain costs, including academic supplies, required equipment, a personal computer, personal services, and laundry and dry cleaning. A fourth class cadet (freshman) incurs expenses of approximately $11,808 during the first year at West Point. To help a cadet meet these expenses, a cadet earns a monthly paycheck and receives a $6,360 pay advance. This pay advance is necessary because cadet expenses accrue faster than cadet pay during the first few months at the academy. Therefore, you are required to make a nonrefundable deposit before arriving at the military academy." You get paid enough to cover all of these expenses and then some over the four years you're a cadet, but since they issue you so much stuff at the beginning of Beast before you've been paid any money by the Army, you have to leave a deposit in case you wash out.

BAKERMIDDLE,
I know exactly what you're talking about. This is on page 6 of the PDF in your portal:

"Parents and candidates should make every possible effort to meet the initial deposit requirement. Requests for a waiver or deferment of the deposit are considered on a case-by-case basis. A request for a waiver should be sent to:
Treasurer, USMA
Official Mail & Distribution Center
646 Swift Road
West Point, NY 10996-1905"

Hope this helps. I report at 9:00 - see you on I-Day!!!

=)

America's Finest gave an example. You have to look at the restrictions to the scholarships because surprisingly, many just hand you a check and it is up to you to spend it for college. Scholarships also come in all denominations. Even if you get a small one worth $500, multiple small ones or one large one, hey its money you didn't have before, right?

So take a look around, online at fastweb or local scholarships (which may be easier to obtain), and at try your hand at a scholarship or two. Good Luck!

Hey, some of us got it! I felt old when at the Smithsonian I said to my cadet, "Look! It's Archie Bunker's chair!!" to which he replied, "Who??"

thanks momof3boys

MO3B~Thanks for the reasurance! Deleted my previous post after rereading the posts and thinking the MASH reference would be misconstrued.:shake:

No, his first name is Michael. QUOTE]

Obviously I am an old fart, as this 1970s pop culture reference fell flat.

Major Frank Burns is a character from MASH. He is one of the principal antagonists to CPTs Pierce, McIntyre, and Hunnicutt. He is a moody and poorly skilled Army surgeon with the 4077th MASH during the Korean War.... and, not to forget a principal plot point, is also the paramour to Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, the Chief Nurse of the 4077th.

sprog - I was wondering if that would go over a few heads.
guess it did--

If you graduated college in 1999, I would hardly consider you old, you probably weren't even born when Frank Burns was on the show! (he was on from 1972 through 1977)

Think of us who actually watched it on CBS when it first aired.

I do remember the finale of the show, although I was pretty young. There was a lot of hype for it, and my folks were excited about watching it. I was more of a Dukes of Hazzard fan at the time...but I was what, 5 or 6. I did watch all the episodes in syndication, though...came on after school. My all-time favorite TV program...especially the episodes with LTC Blake. GIven the earlier response from the OP, apparently it is no longer even in re-runs, as my reference failed to connect.

There aren't any "dorms"
I was under the impression there was wifi in the barracks as well but I guess it shouldn't matter so long as theres an ethernet port in your room, not like your going to be using your laptop in the stairs or while sitting on the john.
