    Thanks for posting this!

I'm confused on one thing though - what does Branch Detail mean? ADSO? What is the significance of some numbers in that column being negative?

A branch detail is when an officer from a soft-skill branch, typically your FS branches, is detailed to a MFE branch (the old Combat Arms). It is generally voluntary and means that the officer will serve his/her first few years (2-3, they shoot for 3) in a combat branch. It is common for an intel or AG officer to branch detail to infantry or armor. Once his detail is complete, he will return to his "carrier" branch to serve out his career. It's a way to get soft-skill officers some hard-skill exposure.

The negative numbers mean that officers were detailed FROM that branch. See how MI has -30? That means that of those who went MI, 30 detailed to other branches and will not go into the Army as MI lieutenants. But, they will be MI captains.

Will the Branch Detail guys from MI to Infantry for example still have opportunities at Ranger school, Airborne (if they haven't already) and basic Inf school like a normal Inf 2nd Lt would? When will they go to MI school (if there is one?)

They will go to the detailed branch school, e.g. IOBC. Other schools, such as Ranger, are conditional based on timing and other factors. Generally they can.

I am a little confused. How does one graduate and then go into the Army as a captain?

You're misunderstanding. They will go into the Army as LTs. But not as MI lieutenants. They will be commissioned as 2LTs of armor/infantry/etc. They are commissioned into their detail branch. Once they become captains, they will be automatically branch transferred back to their carrier (donor) branch, which in this case is MI. Thus, they will not be MI lieutenants. But they will be MI captains.

That's why they subtract the branch detail numbers from the donor branches, because it affects the end strength of LTs in that branch.

I understand why many men branching MI would want to first detail in combat. Do women ever do this- those who are going into MI (or another support branch)? Women, not being allowed to be most in most combat positions are left with aviation. Does anyone detail aviation or no?

No, you cannot branch detail to aviation.

Aviation is not the only combat branch women can be in. They can also branch Air Defense Artillary, Field Artillery, and Engineers.
