My son received a call from his LtC last night that branch assignments had been released. He received infantry. When will he find out his IBOLC & ranger school dates? When will duty posts be released?

Your son graduates in December, right? Does that mean the Branch Assignments have been made for December graduates, or for all graduates during this Fiscal Year?... ie. December, March (for Quarter Schools, 2nd Qtr) and May/June?

Ranger dates won't come until he's at Benning, and depending on the flow, he may not get Ranger until after he leaves Benning. His IBOLC date is up to the LT strength manager(s) at HRC, and he'll be notified sometime in the spring most likely, though that varies. If he graduates in December, he may get a chance to beat the USMA rush through IBOLC.

Yes, he graduates & commissions in December. He's hoping to go to IBOLC in Jan or Feb.

You'll find that the BOLC dates are spread all through the year sometimes. When my son graduated last Spring the BOLC dates for the cadets in his Battalion ranged from right after graduation all the way to April of the following year. There were 3 cadets that branched Aviation, my son left 13 days after graduation, the second reports end of December, the third in March 2013. Of the two Infantry cadets one leaves November, the other April of 2013. The BOLC dates for the remaining cadets were spread out as well.

That is Correct. Ranger dates can vary after IBOLC - a few days, a month or longer if recovery is needed for any injuries in IBOLC.

IBOLC - Talk to his PMS (after he gets his date)about where he will live. He may need to find a place of his own off the base at Benning. My DS went for a fully furnished apartment with cable, internet and washer and dryer. Much more expensive but it balances out with the individual bills for above rolled into one. Try to get a roomate if possible.

Does OML accession score factor into when they report for IBOLC? I wondered how they determine when they report...

    Scoutpilot -

How long did you wait to go to Aviation BOLC after graduation?

Is there a usual wait time, or is it just situationally dependent? I have someone I know that just branched AD Aviation.

Not sure if this is still the practice, but when I went through IOBC, infantry officers going to mechanized infantry units went to Bradley Leaders Course (6 weeks) before Ranger School. Also, some infantry 2LTs going overseas went to Motar Platoon Leaders Course. Airborne school for 82nd bound, if not airborne qualified. Ranger school was the last school before leaving Fort Benning for Infantry 2LTs.

    Good old days . . .

It seems from what I heard that Ranger now comes right after IBOLC then the are specialized schools such as Mechanized, Airborne depending on Final Army Division.

I've wondered that also. Also wonder if colleges that finish in early May vs. late May vs. in June are treated as different pools... that is, as first-come-first-served.

I am a USMA grad so the standard ROTC wait does not apply to me. I started flight school very shortly after arriving, but there were bubbles involved. Some ROTC folks will start early, many will have a significant wait. USMA has priority in the June-September timeframe.

I suppose then that ROTC cadets Branching MI or MS wouldn't have to deal with that wait behind USMA cadets as much... very few USMA cadets commission into MI or MS, even though they're quite popular and hard to get out of ROTC. And I would suppose then that the MFE branches (IN, AV, AR, etc.) for ROTC cadets would tend to get the longest wait times.

I can only relay what my son told me about his report date.

The way he said his PMS explained it was that USMA cadets get to see the list of dates for BOLC, a USMA cadet's Mother who posts on the board quite a bit also said this. The USMA cadets get to select available dates based on their OML at WP. It was also explained that WP grads get a certain amount of leave after they graduate, not really sure how this works or how this plays into the equation.

ROTC grads do not get to see the BOLC date list, they fill out a request for when they would like to go to BOLC, at least they did at my son's battalion. I don't really think the request meant a whole lot as far as when they go. My son had requested the end of August, he got the 1st of June. The PMS told him it was because of his OML standing that he was given an earlier date, not sure if that can be confirmed. As I had said earlier, the report dates for the cadets that graduated last year were all over the board. My son reported to Ft. Rucker for Aviation about 2 weeks before any USMA grads arrived.

The other two cadets that branched Aviation will report in late December and March, they both were with the National Guard, not sure if that played any part in their later report dates.

Congratulations to your son for branching Infantry.

As I said in my previous post, my son was AROTC, he branched Active Duty Aviation, he graduated May 12th and reported to Ft. Rucker June 1st, he started ABOLC June 7th.

There were no USMA grads in his class, all the O's were from ROTC, USMA grads did not start showing up for a couple weeks.

The other two cadet from his class that branched Aviation were through the National Guard, their report dates are much later, Dec. and Mar.

Tell your friend congratulations on AD Aviation, tell him to enjoy himself now, it's not easy. I loved my son's comment the other day..."I feel like I have studied more the last 4 months then I did the entire time I was in College" and he's just beginning.

It's branching for December and spring graduates. MSVs get assessed with the class behind them.
