Labor Day seems so far away, but it is time to think about Parents Weekend. For the parents of the class of 2016, you definitely want to come if you can afford to. Your Doolie will have 3.5 weeks of classes behind them and will be anxious to get off base (and sleep and eat something other than Mitch's). As soon as you know your DS/DD is accepted and will attend, try and make a hotel reservation (or even better, rent a house). They are starting to fill up already.

One regret I have from last year is that we were in a tiny hotel room and did not allow DS enough space to relax out of uniform (he had to be in uniform when out of the hotel). This year we have rented a home with enough room for both sets of grandparents and our family for the price of 3 hotel rooms.

My point is to make reservations as soon as you know DS/DD is committed to USAFA. Beware of the cancellation policies of both hotels and vacation rentals. Good luck to everyone. Hope to see the Appointment thread light up soon. :thumb:

We stayed in a hotel close to the AFA last year, which made it easy to get to Friday classes and Saturday's football game. We had one room for Friday night since we weren't really in it much, but rented a second adjoining room for Sat. and Sun. nights so our son could sleep late without being disturbed, do a little homework, basically spread out a bit. This year we're staying close to campus again on Friday night, but switching after the football game to one much farther away so we can feel like we are truly away from all the hubbub. We thought about renting a house, but our younger son still wants to be able to swim so we needed a place with an indoor pool. We also made sure we had rooms with a mini-fridge and microwave so we could keep snacks etc. in the room. Our son, like many others we heard from, just wanted to chill and didn't want to head out in uniform everywhere so we stayed in a lot. This upcoming PW will be much nicer, since he now won't have to wear his uniform when we go out to dinner etc.!

Thanks for the heads-up Dad. We were not happy with our hotel last year, and booked a different place a few weeks ago.

I appreciate your ever outgoing helpful posts here. Thank you!

Does the Academy Billeting Office take retirees on a space A basis? Or are they full too all the time?

They aren't full all the time. I get rooms there at least 6-7 times between Sept-Dec. "I'm retired".

HOWEVER: Forget about Parent's weekend. They allow you to get on a "Waiting List" but getting a room is impossible. For parent's weekend, just get a place down town. The other weekends are usually no problem. Once in a while there will be a big conference going on with a lot of TDY's, but that only happened to me one time last year. I keep season football tickets and am down there most weekends without an issue. But don't I also made ALL my reservations early. Like this time of year. Billeting lets you reserve up to 1 year ahead of time. Just not for Parent's weekend; graduation week; or a scheduled conference with large TDY. Then those times are SPACE-A on the day you want to stay. For those times, it's just easier to already get a place down town. later... mike....
