2012 USAFA Summer Seminar Students

I wasn't aware that applications were being accepted already. I assumed it was february 1st like the naval academy. Should i apply now online or would it look bad that it took so long?

If you would like to attend Summer Seminar, apply for it. They're not going to judge you based on the fact that you didn't apply for it immediately.

They're moving pretty fast this year, my son applied last year about mid-Dec and heard back in mid February. He absolutely loved it - it truly cemented his desire to attend the institution. It's a real kick in the pants for those considering applying for appointment.

Although it's not in any way a formal advantage to be selected because it's apparently geographic diversity that controls the process, it must help a little because this is posted on the Academy Admissions Facebook page today.

"Patrice, based on previous historical data, typically 80% of students that attend Summer Seminar are accepted to USAFA. However, there is no guarantee that going to Summer Seminar will get you in to the Academy."

However, for those applying to SS, I wouldn't let that lessen your effort in any way whatsoever to keep excelling and to earn that appointment...

Best and Good Luck

Another thing I'd like to say, and I know it has been said before, but don't get down and unmotivated if you don't get accepted for Summer Seminar. You can still make it. I honestly couldn't have imagined myself getting as far as I have when I had signed up for SS. Good luck everyone.

Has anyone got denied admissions into SS yet?

Two years ago they did not send out letters saying you were not accepted. DS's portal just said "Under Consideration" until it closed. Again, don't fret if you're not accepted. They only take a small amount of candidates compared to the actual class of 2017. Good Luck.

how long after getting the applicant status were you guys accepted ?

Would getting in touch with your liason officer help any in getting an offer to SLS? Expecially when it took over a month to just initially process my application, even though I submitted it on the first day. It was kind of weird how long it took, when ton of canidates got accepted while my application was still being processed. Mabe something happend to my application. I know they're really busy this time of year, but just wondering.

They accepted 300-400 candidates for each of the three seminars last year. It's roughly the same as the number of appointments offered. Being accepted to summer seminar is an indicator that you are on the right track, but no guarantee that you'll be appointed. On the other hand, if you are not accepted, you still have the chance at being offered an appointment. Last year at summer seminar, the individuals in charge told us that, historically, 50% of summer seminar students actually attend USAFA. Not sure if that's accurate or not, it's just the number I remember.

I attended summer seminar last year. I applied around December 16th and received an email on March 15th stating I had to accept or deny the offer by March 29th. I received a rejection email from USNA April 22nd. It's a long process, I know, and it's even longer now that I'm waiting to see whether I'm offered an appointment. You just have to wait, cross your fingers, and do everything you can to succeed in highschool while you have the chance.

How do the workshops work at SLS? I am confused regarding those.

I'm pretty sure those are to see your preference to see your interest on the application... Also, I believe they are short presentations (like classes) to let you get the feel of the classes and what that field is like

Oh yeah. I totally forgot about the part on the application where I did that. Thanks though!

if my app still says: Applicant (your application is under consideration), is that bad at this point?

No, the majority of applicants at this point still have that on their application. I've had that on mine since December 28th and still no change.

yeah i woke up early on the east coast to apply right as the app was available, so i guess we are just in for the long haul. Supposedly the second batch of acceptance letters go out after todayish..?

your academics are very impressive. I'm leaning on EC for me, my academic isn't bad, but the EC is where I shine most IMO. Yours seems quite impressive, i bet you will have no problem getting in. Maybe because we applied so early, ours are at the bottom of the stack?

I think the reason that I didnt get in is that there were other people in my geographical area who were more impressive then my stats and they DID get in. I got into USMA. I am waiting to hear back from NASS. I cant do all three anyhow because I have three other week long overnight commitments. I did really want to get into USAFA SS.

Was yours denied? I don't know of anyone else from my area who is applying to the seminar. is there anyway i can find out?
