2014 BCT Packing List

What to bring

I'm a female and I have a bag that is easy to carry and not too big that has wheels on it so I can roll it. Will I be able to roll the bag once I get there or will I have to pick it up and carry it? Would one recommend that I just bring a backpack and stuff everything into it?

You will have to carry it. Bring a bag that holds everything you are bringing and is easy to carry. That is my recommendation.

Do not bring a rolling suitcase of any size -- you, like all other Basics, will be required to carry your bag, backpack, etc. in one hand for how ever much of the day that is required. Put it all in the smallest, lightest bag or back pack that you can carry in your left hand. If you bring a back pack, you will not be allowed to wear it on your back. You will carry it with your left hand. Just like you will carry your back pack once classes start.

Life was not easy for this C4C.

An important item is the backpack itself. Find one that is very light. The backpack can weigh more than the items that it contains.

DS has an AF blue bag with a shoulder strap that he is removing. It is not a backpack. He feels the bp weight distribution is awkward when held by one strap, and if held at the top the material will not be fun by day's end on the hand. His NIKE athletic bag has housed his sports clothes for ages, he's used to it, and when both handles are put together a padded covering holds them together nicely for him. It is ok not to have a real-live backpack yes?

It is okay not to have a backpack. His athletic bag sounds just fine. But he does want to bring anything with AF on it since this will bring negative attention from the cadre since he is in the wing yet.

Loud and clear, no team or school logo, only the Swush! Just so happens his HS had the same colors as the AFA, but are Eagles! His HS backpack after 4 years wrecked and not fit for I-Day. Sent him out early with the money we saved to enjoy himself in lieu of a backpack-for-a-day! Thank you.

How much cash do they really need during BCT? Would it be enough to have ~$150 in cash and then have a debit or credit card?

Yup. I used my debit card in the cadet store most of the time anyway.

I just got an email from the Association of Graduates. It says there is a price change for the "basic's prepositioned items from the C-Store". Could anyone explain what the prepositioned items are?

If I'm remembering correctly, some of the issued items waiting for you in your room are from the C-Store. Couldn't tell you off hand what they are-but the first time you go the store, you'll have to add $30-40 to whatever you end up buying.

Understand it's the cadet store but what prepositioned
Items?

1 Armband I.D. Holder
1 Attaché Case
1 Flashlight
1 Hangers
1 Large Rubbermaid
1 Laundry Bag
1 Mesh Bag
1 Liquid Hand Soap
1 Lock
1 Lint Roller
1 Plastic Cup
1 Squadron Reflective Belts
2 White Towels
2 Small Rubbermaid
1 Prop & Wings (issued to supply after in-processing)
1 Watch Cap (Oct-Feb)
1 Black Hydration Pack

Your cadet will be able to handle this.

No need to freak out over anything. I truly believe stuff does not matter in basic. Pack what is on the list and nothing more. Whether you brought item X is not going to matter when you are running around with your rifle or low crawling on the assault course. It really becomes non-important, trust me. Plus, they issue you absolutely every single thing you need and more. The C-Store also isn't horrible either and the cadre do bring you there.

I am replying so that this jumps back to the top for all of those who were recently appointed and are starting to look forward. A lot of good information on this thread!

Nice, thanks! Out of curiosity, is anyone planning on bringing boots? They "highly recommend" that we do, but I'm worried about adding more things to carry....
