2015 LOA's recieved

LOA

omnipsi: Chances are your MOCs already know about the LOA. Call their offices and ask the constituent services rep the best way to get the copy of the letter to them. One of my son's MOCs wanted it mailed, the other said to bring it to the interview; however, both were already aware of his receipt of the LOA.

Received LOA's from both USMA and USNA. USMA LOA doesn't copy to MOC's, but, USNA LOA copies to each MOC (Congressman and 2 Senators). Sent a copy of USMA LOA to each MOC.

So, for the VP nomination you can download 5 letters of recommendation. Should one consider attaching the LOA? Pushing the envelope a bit too much?

Yes, moot point. So is it correct to say that if you check all the boxes for academies interested in on the VP app, your name will appear on a spreadsheet to each academy?
Spreadsheet or list, but yes that was my interpretation.

What does the VP do with the uploaded letters of rec? Forward to the academy?
I have no idea but I assume so, My distinct impression is that actually receiving one of the few VP noms is like hitting the lottery. Applying for one just demonstrates your interest in pursuing all possible noms and offers the SAs one more possible nom source. I doubt the SA will bother to read all the VP nom recommendation letters...they have enough of their own. Do they even see the VP or any of the other recommendation letters that applicants send to their MOCs? I doubt it.
Good Luck!:thumb:

So, does the lottery apply to getting on the "list"/"spreadsheet" or having your name selected from it at a particular academy?

If the latter is the case, it would seem that everyone with an LOA would definitely get an appointment , assuming they submitted for a VP nom. I recall reading that some candidates with LOAs don't get an appointment.

Right back at ya!!

Just a parent, but from the docs I've read it works like this:

VP office hands the spreadsheet to the academy, and the academy picks the appointee from there based on the academies scores for the VP nom applicants. He's allowed five like any other MOC.

If the latter is the case, it would seem that everyone with an LOA would definitely get an appointment , assuming they submitted for a VP nom. I recall reading that some candidates with LOAs don't get an appointment.

That's the lottery aspect- he functions like a MOC, so he can only have 5 appointee at a time at a particular academy. (average of 1 per year) And the academy ranks & picks that on based on their scores they already have for the potential nominees. So the odds are not great to be picked as the one VP appointee.

LOA's change things, as if you received a nomination (made it onto a slate, even if not picked as *the* appointee), the academies have more flexibility. They can use other slots to bring the class to full strength as long as they were nominated (made it onto a slate of ten) by someone.

That's the key for an LOA- you don't have to necessarily be picked as principle or number one, but have to be on someone's slate. So you still need to apply as if you did not have an LOA and treat the interviews seriously, etc.

If you are in a highly competitive state & district, it's not impossible that you'll have multiple LOA holders on that slate. Which is OK, but it's still a competition, which is why all the wise folks on the forums tell you to pretend like you did not have that LOA!

Received my LOA two nights ago, dated 10/04

So, hypothetically speaking, if 10 candidates from one district received LOAs and were nominated by their MOC, they would all gain admission, despite that the MOC would be over his 5 appointee limit?

Or am I understanding this incorrectly?

Yep. One candidate will fill the MOC's vacancy and the other 9 will be admitted as qualified alternates. Some of those also could have other nominations available to them i.e. Presidential etc.

Yaaaaaay SVG and everyone else!! :groupwave:

Hey, I recently received a letter from the Admissions Commitee saying that I was found fully qualified. Is this letter an LOA or does it just mean I am 3q'd? What does an LOA even say in it?

Unless I'm mistaken, what you recieved is a 3Q letter. An LOA says that the admissions committee has recommended you for a cadetship and that a spot is being held for you if you meet the requirements they mention in the letter (like nomination, CFA, DODMERB qualification, etc.). A 3Q letter means that you are qualified scholastically, physically, and medically but it does not mean that a spot in the class is reserved for you if you recieve/have a nomination. Unless its a principal nomination of course.

Just realized we never put DS on the list from back in July. Also a close friend of his who just received one as well. (He's not on the forum)

Friend of Hawk's son- GA?? - October

Wow, four USMA LOA's in GA just that we know of! No wonder Senate noms are so tight this year!

I really don't think that the number of GA LOA's is uncommon. Georgia sends many great cadets to West Point! I have heard of several instances where multiple candidates in the same school receive LOA's.
