    Hi,
My name is Dena. Where are you from? How are your nomination applications going? I've done my Pre-candidate questionnaire too and started my nomination applications. I'm going to submit them soon. :D

Im in Central Texas. I've started to get all of the recommendations letters that I need for the nomination and already finished the questionnaire several weeks ago.

There tends to be just a bit of that around here, but cockiness won't get you an appointment. Work on that SAT and ACT score.

My advice to you is drop the cockiness. If you stay humble and don't get an appointment, you'll much better off than if you were cocky the whole time and ended up not getting an appointment. You'd look very stupid. That is all...

    ClickClack,

First off. Welcome and good luck for your upcoming yr.

I agree with others drop the cockiness, especially since you are from a state that is considered very competitive. MOC's in TX share the wealth, in other words, typically 1 nom from the 3 sources available. If you can get a Pres. remember that is a national nom, you will compete against every military dependent across the country and the world, so it is not 1 out 10 on a slate, it is more like 100 out of 500 (less odds).

I also agree that for your PAR you need to bump it up. 660 M is low, 700 is your goal to feel competitive. Flieger, CC (ALO's) stated LY that 700 was the M marker. Many of the TWE's went to candidates with multiple noms, but did not break the 700.

AFA is not being mean, it is just the fact that is how the higher caliber is now for the incoming classes. Even in 2008 for 12, the mean M was 680+. That was a yr they had @1360 cadets, next yr it will be @1100 with the same size pool. Supply and demand will tell you 660 needs to be bumped up.

You did not state how many AP's or your class rank. I don't put too much weight into the gpa, because the AFA may re-weight that portion, and a 3.3 at your school could change to a 3.68 on the AFA scale. The class rank, scale and rigor is more guidance for this site when you say I have a 3.3.

Most AFA candidates will apply for AFROTC too, place into your mind that AFROTC does not superscore, it is best sitting. It is also a national board, not geo-centric like the AFA. They place into the equation tech vs. non-tech. The avg SAT for a Type 1 was 1420, Type 7 was 1360. Typically only 15-20% of the scholarships go to non-tech. AFROTC will only take your final cgpa junior yr. AFA will take 7th semester SR yr.

Work on that PAR portion. Again, best wishes for 2017, thank you for wanting to defend this great country. Take this summer and discuss with your ALO where you are weak. Shore it up.

Also work on your CFA because that is part of your WCS. DS2 played FB for 4 yrs, 2 Varsity, but because of his build pull-ups would have been his problem. You can max everything, but fail 1 portion (min) and that will result in a fail. Yrs ago they allowed candidates to take a 2nd CFA, but not so anymore. Only the AFA can re-open that portal once submitted. JMPO the candidates have the hardest problem on the pull ups and the BBall throw. Practice it now so you can max it.

I hope so. I'm competing with 3 other people from my school alone, but I'm hopeful.
I'm currently taking the 2 AP classes offered, and am number 2 in my class of 107, but since I've taken about 4 college classes through concurrent enrollment I should move up once I transfer my units. I have a weighted GPA of 4.45 and an unweighted of 4.0. I got a 780 on the SAT Critical Reading and a 670 on the SAT Math. I got a composite score of 30 on the ACT with a 34 in Reading a 26 in Math(but I'm retaking in October). I've lettered 3 times in Cross Country, twice in Track and Field, and run 5 marathons. I'm an officer in my AFJROTC unit and have nearly 800 hours of community service. I've been to Nashville to put on a relief camp and was selected to attend Summer Seminar. I really hope I'm competitive, but I don't know because I have no one to compare it to really, nobody from my school has ever gone to AFA. You sound like you're pretty qualified though. :)

    hi bookworm,

try to make captain of your xc and/or track team. that will help you wcs as well. your stats look really good. i would think you are competitive. how are your running times? if you're fast perhaps you can get an edge by being a recruited athlete.

    best of luck to you.

Can't you compare yourself to the other three people you are applying? If you really must know, your stats are pretty good, maybe just work on getting your math scores up and I think you'd be a shoe in.

    Good luck!

I am sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm from Indiana. Is there a list of the competetive states? Where does Indiana rank?

There is no official list that I know of, but typically the states that have a lot of military installations or an SA are the most competitive.

I would not place Indiana on the list. Most will tell you CA, CO, TX, NY, FL and VA are the most competitive.

The big hint if your state is competitive comes from how many noms you can get. The states I mentioned do what is called "sharing the wealth" or "talking". In other words they only give out 1 nom, from 1 source. Every now and than someone will get two, but for the most part the MOCs even tell them up front if you have another MOC nom., we will not consider giving you one.

Some states can have hundreds of applicants for just 10 spots.

Ive taking AP history the last two years and will be in AP physic, Ap Calc and most likely Ap gov and econ as a senior. As for the cockiness it was more as a joke, I've learned to drop it over the years( mostly by getting it beat out of me by seniors my freshmen year). As for the SAT scores Im retaking the test the beginning of June

You may want to consider taking the ACT as well. USAFA will superscore your SAT and also compare that to your ACTscores and take the higher of the 2. They do not mix and match (take Math ACT and English SAT). Best wishes. :thumb:

I agree with you, and I want to add one thing just to clarify for others who may read your post. USAFA will only accept your scores if you take the whole ACT. If you choose to only take one section, like Math for example, USAFA will not accept the score.

Yeah, I was basically a captain last year, but unfortunately, our school only lets seniors be the 'official' captains. I don't think I'm anywhere near being competitive for running, our school is really small, and though we do well in our league, we focus mostly on academics. Thanks though.

Well one of them is my twin sister, and though we all think we're fairly competitive for the Academy we're not sure if we're actually competitive or just average in reality. I don't know if that makes sense, but basically, we don't know if we're competitive with the rest of the applicants.
