Now I know some ole' timers are going to come on here and protest posting of LOA stats and tell people not to follow them. It is my opinion that the stats on the official website regarding admissions averages are very misleading to many people, even though they are accurate. However, they are only accurate when taken in the entirety. You need to know your area specifically. !!! Unless you can speak 8 dialects of Chinese, run a 4:10 mile, or come from an under represented area the averages are not necessarily for you. In other words if you are just starting out on this process don't shoot for the scores on the USNA admissions page. Shoot for the LOA scores (even though an appointment is the ultimate goal, not an LOA) When I did a historic search of stats from our area, we new that DS had to treat each point in the admission process like a golden nugget. Given the LOA and Admission stats posted by others on this forum from our area, our son had to live by the words of General Hal Moore, “There is always one more thing you can do to increase your odds of success.”

    Good Luck 2017!

The best advice to applicants is to strive to do the BEST they can in all aspects of their h.s. resume. Many applicants ARE class presidents, varsity athletes AND top students academically. The is really no magic there. The reality is, those are the people you are competing against for an appointment.

Since no one outside of the admissions committee knows the point values assigned to various aspects of your application, there isn't a lot of value in trying to compare line items on resumes.

Since the academy never posted the LOA 'requirements' or how many they plan to issue in any given year, you are still at best only able to guess at those things.

    Congratulations! That's very awesome!!!

Just curious, some people have been saying that before you receive an LOA, your DoDMERB page reflect it. Was this the case for you?

No there has been no change on his DoDMERB status. Also DS called BGO last night to tell him and BGO did not know. There was no red flags before hand. In fact BGO said he was competitive but he has worked with people with higher stats who have not gotten in at all.

Thanks! Just curious. But that is definitely great news! I'm sure you and your family are extremely proud. Good luck on the nomination! (Although I'm sure your DS will have no trouble)

That's a high Unweighted GPA for the start of a Senior year and to only be 70th in class rank. My son had a 4.0U & 4.45W after his Jun year and was 1st in his class. He had completed 9 AP classes through his Junior year.

How many AP classes did your child take and it would appear that a couple classes ended up B's? 4.4 GPA and 70th in his class,do you mean 7th?

Hi Longhorn. DS son's high school is ridiculously competitive. I know they ALL say that but really there were kids with 5.0s out of 4.0s (though mathematically that doesn't make sense to me...)This is why our school point-blank will not release rankings. If they did my son would be up a creek.

DS was only in the top ~11% (I would love to say 70/650 is a typo but it isnt:rolleyes:)
Freshman GPA: ~4.2 (on a 4 pt scale)
(decided USNA and turned study habits around)
Sophomore GPA: ~4.4 (on a 4 pt scale)
    Junior GPA: ~4.8 (on a 4 pt scale):thumb:

Our school has some kind of path that if you take AP Chinese along simultaneously with AP Spanish you can somehow end up with over a 5.0 (and there are many kids who do!)
I dont get it though. I think this goes to show you that GPAs/Class ranks are ridiculous.

He has had a few Bs Freshman Yr (though all As Junior Year).
The weighting of the AP classes made the difference.
There are kids who have posted their stats though who have more APs than my son.

I think thats why schools put more weight in ACT scores since they are standardized.

    Go Get The Nomination

Don't expect them to hand it to you. Expect them to challenge you more because you have an LOA. What makes you special? What do you know about leadership? Why do you want to be at the academies, when you can be a hundred different places? You'll have to get up early,go to bed late,no one will tell you your a superstar? In fact it's all about your ability to build a team that's a superstar!

If your eager to answer these questions and you have an LOA,you are in the driver's seat. Good Luck:thumb:
