2018 CGA Waitlist

CGA will assign students to GMC or MMI.

Have your DS/DD physically ready for Scholars R-Day (S-Day) as the three weeks at the Academy prior to shipping to the schools are pretty intense. The word is that CGAS summer is tougher than Swab summer (that's from DS now a 4/C, other classmates agreed). That said they will report to their first Coast Guard billet (and that's what it is) squared away. They will in turn report to the Academy ready for Swab Summer and the 4/C year, and have money in the bank.

jnr Congratulation !

Congrats to DD on CGAS program. My DS was offered CGAS opportunity and each day he is learning more about it and realizing how wonderful an opportunity it is.

She got an email on Monday and portal was updated Tuesday afternoon with the official "congratulations" letter.

Help?

jnr

Followed the news about your son. We are in the same boat. Did you just keep checking the site everyday? It keeps not allowing us in with our info. i have to keep changing the password, Did you have that trouble?

My DS just had his exams yeaterday. I am hoping they have to wait for that for an appointment to the CGAS....and i do not undersatnd the ranking thing..is it first come first serve? Sorry for all the questions...

Just wondering, are most appointments received in February or March?
-Thanks

According to Objee, Regular Admissions notifications rarely come out in February. Look for them in March and April.

Good Luck to you.

eep,

My DD gets an email whenever there is new activity on the portal. She received such an email Tuesday, logged in and saw the official CGAS appointment letter. I don't get any notification, it all goes directly to her.

As far as first come first serve, I really don't know. I know my DD responded very quickly to the initial CGAS wait-list letter indicating she wanted to be on the wait-list, and sent an update about new ACT and HS grades, both of which improved since she submitted her EA1 application. Which of course begs the question: would she have gotten a direct appointment had she waited for her new grades and gone regular decision rather than EA1. I suppose we will never know but I can't seem to find a bad word about CGAS and I have been looking. The more I learn, the more I'm coming to believe that she may actually be better off with CGAS in the long run.

Good luck with your DS.

DS still awaiting EA1 appointment waitlist. He sent in an updated 7th semester transcript. So the wait continues.

Letter stated " Candidates offered an appointment to the Class of 2018 have until May 1st to accept or decline, so we rarely are able to offer appointments to wait list applicants until after this date."

Best wishes to the all the other candidates waiting too!

has anyone been pulled off the waitlist before May 1st?

Yes, but generally after the initial RA offers are made and spots are declined. I honestly wouldn't expect wait list offers to be made until April at the earliest. I have seen students of mine that were waitlisted picked up in the second half of April, and have heard of offers given as late as the end of May.

Keep plan B running. You can always jump to the academy if offered. If there is no offer, you don't want to be left out in the cold.

Ok. I have been over this before, but I am really confused. How many people are offered appointments off of the waitlist on average? My admissions counselor told me that 26 people were offered the waitlist last year and all 26 people were offered appointments eventually. However, the associate director of admissions told me that 125 people were offered the waitlist last year and only 15 people were eventually offered appointments. Furthermore, my USNA BGO told me that 35 out of 40 people were offered appointments from the USCGA waitlist last year. I have even hear 54 out of 400 appointments from the waitlist. Does anyone have the real answer?

That's a lot of different answers!

My husband, who is an Academy Admissions Partner, was told by Admissions that the wait list was cleared last year. I don't know the specific numbers.

Congrats on making the wait list. Hang in there!

Well last year the wait list was not cleared that is for certain. If it was, I would be at the academy right now. the reason you might have heard different numbers was because a few years ago they used to offer about 400 wait list spots.

Today, however, they have reduced that number to around 75...

I hope not to confuse you with more numbers, but I was told that about 50 out of 75 people were offered appointments from the wait list.

Good luck!! There are also plenty of other opportunities to get into the academy if you are not accepted this year, so do not be disappointed if you do not receive an appointment. View it as another year to better prepare yourself for the academy!

Another year to improve yourself after being on the wait list... I would say if you play your cards right you are looking at a good shot... that's what I am hoping at least!

So where are you getting your numbers from? 75 on the waitlist, accept 50 from the waitlist. I've heard there will be at least 100 on the list and no idea how many of them will be offered. Over 2000 people applied for 240 slots. I've heard that they have 320 some people that are offered. Along with 100 on the waitlist, the odds are not good. I am worried if the numbers I've heard are correct. I would feel better if it was only 75 on the waitlist and 50 get in.

What will happen to RA applicants who are just scheduled for review this week? If these numbers are correct, 100 on the waitlist without RA finalist?

So where are you getting your numbers from?

There are approximately 150 applicants currently on the wait list. Unfortunately, there is no way to know how many appointments we will be able to offer to wait list applicants this year because that number is determined by: 1) How many appointments are offered during Regular Admission...those reviews are still in progress; and 2) How many applicants offered appointments during Early Action/Regular Admission decline their spot in the class...they have until May 1st to make that decision. As far as I know, we have always been able to tender at least some appointments to applicants on the wait list; however, it's impossible to know how many until early May.

I'm not sure I understand the second question, but we're still reviewing Regular Admission (RA) applicants for appointment to the Class of 2018. The number of Early Action applicants offered a spot on the wait list has no impact on the number of appointments offered to RA applicants.

I just received an email stating that my application is complete and will be reviewed soon. How quickly would the CGA get to it, and is that any indication of a response coming soon?
