2018 CGA Waitlist

I've been told the same thing, by both my AO and by an automatic e-mail (I hear a lot of people have gotten) that my application will be "reviewed soon". When I asked your same question about when I might hear a response I got back just the one sentence "You should hear something soon.".

I don't know to be very excited or otherwise by that, I hope it means something good! Good luck to all.

Informed RA appointees

There are approximately 150 applicants currently on the wait list. Unfortunately, there is no way to know how many appointments we will be able to offer to wait list applicants this year because that number is determined by: 1) How many appointments are offered during Regular Admission...those reviews are still in progress; and 2) How many applicants offered appointments during Early Action/Regular Admission decline their spot in the class...they have until May 1st to make that decision. As far as I know, we have always been able to tender at least some appointments to applicants on the wait list; however, it's impossible to know how many until early May.

Some RA appointees are now posting their acceptances in the forum. Although notification isn't guaranteed until 15APR, how come some are getting notices early? Does the geographical location matter in appointment decision? Such as each state will only be allowed this number of appointees? Just curious. Thanks.

Regular Admission decisions are released on a rolling basis, just like Early Action decisions were, so some applicants will be notified earlier than others. An applicant's home of record is considered as part of our holistic review, but there are no quotas or maximum number of appointments allowed per state.

Objee,

Appears to be alot more candidates on this year's waitlist than last year. Are there any reasons you can share with us? Is the target class size still around 250?

Thank you.

The slightly larger wait list this year is primarily based on a slightly larger incoming class. There were approximately 125 applicants offered a spot on the wait list for the Class of 2017...incoming class size of 235. There are approximately 150 applicants on the wait list for the Class of 2018...incoming class size of 250.

How does one know he is on the waitlist? Is that something that must be acknowledged by the candidate?

As a follow up to that, what is the earliest one can be offered an appointment from the waitlist?

Of that 125 on last year's waitlist, how many actually got offerered and likewise, of the 150 on this year's list, how many will get offered. I know you may not be able to speculate on this year's list, but you should know about last year. We should be able to deduce from that how many possible appointments this year.

Applicants are notified they are being offered a spot on the wait list in the same manner other applicants are notified they are being appointed or not being appointed. Applicants must "accept" their spot on the wait list and provide an updated academic transcript by a deadline (provided in their wait list notification letter) or they are withdrawn from further consideration.

The Director of Admissions can convene a wait list review board and tender appointments to wait list applicants whenever he wants to, but it's unusual for that to occur before all Regular Admission (RA) applicants have been reviewed. In addition, depending upon the number of appointments tendered during Early Action and RA, he may wait until the May 1st accept/decline deadline.

Class of 2014 - Approximately 640 Alternates, 64 Appointments (Wait List did not exist)
Class of 2015 - Approximately 480 Alternates, 54 Appointments (Wait List did not exist)
Class of 2016 - Approximately 100 Wait List, 26 Appointments
Class of 2017 - Approximately 125 Wait List, 43 Appointments
Class of 2018 - Approximately 150 Wait List, XX Appointments

If you believe that you can "deduce" from this data how many appointments will be offered to applicants on the wait list this year, you're welcome to do so; however, I say again it's going to depend upon: 1) How many appointments are tendered during Regular Admission; and 2) How many applicants offered appointments during Early Action/Regular Admission decline their spot in the class.

Objee, thanks very much for the answers!

I saw in the forum, some discussion about whether an RA applicant can be placed on the waitlist. Never saw a definitive answer. Anyone know for sure? Thx.

From what I understand, RA applicants will not be wait listed.

I think the best answer is Regular Admission (RA) applicants are not normally offered spots on the wait list, but the Director of Admissions can certainly do it if he wants to. It would just be rare that an applicant with a similar profile (as the RA applicant being waitlisted) wasn't already waitlisted during Early Action.

Thanks. And if that RA applicant did get waitlisted, he/she would still get the formal notification in need of response, I would think. Yes?

Correct...they would be notified (prior to 4/15) of the wait list offer just like the Early Action applicants were and would need to accept their spot on the wait list by a deadline outlined in the notification letter.

Thanks for all the great answers!
