With Billet night and the 1st tour for the class of 2011 handout, I am wondering how the selection for the 2nd tour is handled:
is it a 3 year tour?
what are the types of billets?

I'm sure LITS will chime in, but basically, the CG puts out "shopping lists" of sorts in which they let the Lt(jg)'s know what assignments, both on land and at sea, are available. Also, some opt to attend graduate school at this point, as well as Flight School. The length of the assignments vary, some two year and some three. Those in the Class of 2009, such as my son, are waiting to hear. A few have gotten their assignments already, others wait. BTW there are also one-year tours in Iraq(PATFORSWA). Those people heard a few months ago as they have had to start training for them already. Hope this helps. But don't jump the gun so to speak.

Edit, as far as the type of billets, there are everything from Command of an 87-foot patrol boat, to XO and Ops jobs, to intel to inspection jobs at sectors. Not to mention Public Affairs as LITS can attest.

The jg tour sounds like it could be one of the best out of a career...so many possibilities.

How does selection work? So would you just put in for a shopping list of things and hope it works out for you? Of course I suppose performance scores have a huge factor...

You put together a wish list of billets much the same as the 1/c's do. Yes, your performance ratings come into it. Also, some of the Lt jgs "screen for command." That is they are evaluated for their potential for command. Some of them get picked to be C/O's, X/O's etc. It's quite a process.

I wouldn't say LTJG tours are the best of a career, or we would have a serious retention problem. Each rank has some very promising billets.
