Kicking myself everyday for not applying for the 4 year Army ROTC scholarship but will be attending VMI next year with every intention of obtaining a 3.5, 3 year or USMA appointment.

Current and former cadets at VMI: what would you say the mean credentials are for scholarship winners? GPA, activities, high school grades, etc?

I graduated high school with a 3.4 GPA and in the top quarter of my class. I scores a 1760 composite on my SAT (610 CR, 570 M, 580 W) I will be an International Studies major at VMI (any influence?) and will be busting my ass to get what I want.

Thanks!

DS started VMI with same gpa, same major, slightly higher SAT scores and a AROTC 3 year scholarship. Was upgraded to a 4 year within first three weeks of fall semester along with 4 others. Did well on APFT (did not max but 285 range if I remember correctly). While he will most likely never have the highest gpa or pt score, he has true passion for this path and a never quit attitude. Cadre noticed. Good luck.

So what GPA did he have at VMI? I heard I should shoot for a 3.0.

In the past a 3.0 would put you low on the OML for branching, with the new changes coming that may not be as big an issue.

If you want a shot at a campus based scholarship you should shoot a bit higher as well as a very good APFT, the two will go together.

KarenH's DS received his scholarship just a couple weeks into school, he would not have had an established GPA at VMI at that time. The APFT and his high school stats along with how he performed in ROTC for that short time is what they would have looked at as far as a scholarship offer.

I have a 280 APFT now, easily a 300 before matriculation. I'll shoot for higher but will use 3.0 as a minimum.

DS ended rat year with a 3.1 gpa. Jcleppe is correct; this did not play into his upgrade to a 4 year so early in the fall semester. I'm convinced attitude and heart did that.
