DD got JROTC nomination on her portal today making her 3Q'd with LOE and Nom. Does anyone have experience with how these Noms are used? Does West Point usually wait until after MOC nominations come in to appoint in these ROTC slots or do they start appointing before like Presidentials? Almost makes the wait worse since she now has a Nom

Congrats! I would have your DD direct her questions to her RC for the most current information

Thank you, I must say the shriek that came out of her was exciting to see! I will have her direct her questions to her RC as you suggest. She has completed her applications for VP, senatorial and congressional nominations since we are aware that there is no guarantee with just the ROTC nomination (or with any nomination for that matter).

The Admissions Office shuffles nominations to appoint cadets they want, so getting multiple nomination is good but I was told by my RC he had cases where a candidate with multiple nominations didn't get appointed.

The appointment authority for non-Congressional nominations are usually "up to." So with ROTC nominations, I believe West Point can appoint up to 20 cadets. Accordingly, if West Point appoints to "up to" number, they will go over the limit (the total size of Corps being limited to 4400, so they can appoint only so many per year). So some scenario for you DD

    Some scenario for your DD

Your DD is must accept, West Point will offer her appointment sooner and figure out which nomination to use later (even if your DD has only one nomination not win her nomination category, she can be appointed from the National Waiting List).

Your DD is should accept, West Point will wait to see where she ends up in the Congressional/Senate/ROTC nomination or National Waiting List standing to figure out which nomination to use to appoint her. This gets complicated other candidates emerges, the RC might have to keep shuffling nomination to maximize appointment numbers. So my understanding is that the final charging of appointments against nomination category happens at the end of the admissions cycle.

Getting nomination is good, but just make the waiting worse.

    Best of luck.

Bear in mind that an LOE is not an LOA; she needs to go after all nomination sources. We'll see the LOA's first...that will be Jan. or Feb. A few will come sooner, depending on when nominations are announced.

mom3boys is absolutely correct. An LOE is NOT an LOA. She is far from in and may not get in. I certainly hope she does and being 3Q'ed with at least one nomination helps, but all nominations should be pursued.

^^ Agreed. Being 3Q and having a NOM puts you in the RUNNING with everyone else to be considered for an appointment. Still very early in the process for next year.

Yes, we are aware and she has already completed all applications for all nomination sources. Embracing the idea it may be a long wait for any decision.

Did you DD get notification that she is 3Q'd or is this just your assumption? Some RC's send out letters notifying candidates that they are triple qualified, others do not. Our DS never got the 3Q letter, but had 3 nominations. We still do not know which nomination source was charged with his appointment. He got his appointment during the first big wave of appointments at the end of January.

She did not get a letter but qualified medically on portal, passed CFA at SLE and RC confirmed she qualifies academically....so we are assuming she is 3Q'd despite not receiving letter. Her application was also complete when LOE was issued on 9/20 and then ROTC nomination posted today. She is just waiting for MOC interviews at this point and overnight visit which is scheduled for November 7th. The wait begins!

    Hey,

I am currently a plebe here at the academy and actually got in under similar circumstances to your DD. I got an LOE and my MOC noms were to USAFA, so I only had my ROTC category nom to go on. I got my LOE in October-ish and my appointment in mid February if I remember correctly. Their timeline may be different this year, but that was my personal experience.

The formal 3q letter is an interesting topic. 2018 ds received the formal 3q letter pretty early on but did not receive an loa or an loe. My 2019 ds did receive an loa but not a 3 q letter. Best advice I have read on this thread so far is from tug boat. If your dd has questions...she should direct them to her rc for further guidance and to continue to pursue all applicable noms. Congrats!

Thank you everyone for your advice and words of encouragement. She has reached out to her RC with her questions, retook SAT this morning because hers are not perfect so room to improve, finished her other Nom apps yesterday and is preparing herself to wait while completing plans B, C and D!
