DS got a letter today saying that the Navy had gone over his things and he is scholastically qualified. So now he is 3 Q'd. Yay!!! All his packets except the VP are in, so now we wait....and wait.... and wait!

Does anyone know if there is a way (without calling the academy) to know when they receive things that you have sent, like updates to your file? The letter said to look on the CIS site for your updates. My DS sent several things about a month ago.

My DS received this "scholastically qualified" letter today too.
It was nice to receive this but know we still have a long way to go so we are cautiously optimistic!

My daughter also received her 'scholastically qualified' letter today.

Have you checked the website for the updates? We have found they are pretty quick about posting things.

I am assuming you are from NJ from your name. Any news on interviews with our senators? We haven't heard anything yet. :frown:

DD also got her "Sholastically Qualified" letter today along with her "Qualified" letter from Dodmerb! I am interested to know also about updates as well. I am under the impression that the only updates that would really show up on CIS once a file is complete are updates to test scores or nominations. If it has been a month since new test scores were submitted, I would definitely call.

My son received his letter today also. Been DoDMERB qualified since July. His friend Iceman92 has a LOA so we're hoping for good things for both of them.

Yes, I received a scholastically qualified letter as well.. It's weird because I've already received a LOA. Just waiting for the nominations.
And as far as I know, its the CIS site that marks everything as received.

Can you clarify what triple Q's is? I assume scholastically qualified, passing the Dodmerb and what is the third Q?

The pass/fail portion of the CFA. However, how well one does actually adds to are deducts from the overall scholastic qualification score.

Not sure what you are trying to say here. First of all, are you notified if you pass/fail the CFA? How does CFA affect scholastic qualification? How do you know if you are 3Q'd?

My son received the same "scholastically qualified" letter yesterday. Medically qualified since July.

This is where it get's confusing for candidates & parents- It is implied by many that a passing CFA is required to get a "scholastically qualified" letter. If you had a failing CFA you'd not meet the requirements.

But if so, then why is it a separate part of the 3Q? Just common across the academies?

Would USNA send a scholastically qualified letter without a passing CFA?

First off, the final scholastic qualification is determined by a compilation of the total whole person multipliers. These are from both the application and points added/deducted by the board during the review process. Bottom line-if there are enough points, a scholastic qualification is determined.

The Academy reserves the right, in special situation,s to review a record prior to the CFA. In the vast majority of the time, it will never happen, especially with the average candidate. However, it might. If it does, and the points awarded for a minimally passing future CFA would not change the results, a scholastic qualification might be awarded. For example, I would think a three sport twelve letter individual with a temporary injury precluding taking the CFA would have a better chance of going before the board than an single minor sport individual who has never made it out of the JV ranks.

So, for a very very few, a scholastic qual might preceed a CFA but only if a future minimally qualified CFA score would not jeprodize the final qualification. However, for the vast majority, a passing CFA will be a precursor to board review.

No idea why it continues. I have only known of one individual who ent before the board without the CFA. It was due to a sports injury which precluded the test. However, he was rejected by USNA (and ended up at AFA). My suspicions are that back in an earlier era, the admissions board did not concern themselves with the physical fitness of the individual and that, even though the previous reporting system remains, the procedures have changed slightly.

This all makes sense, and aligns with the conventional wisdom you hear/read about USNA "scholastically qualified" letters.

From DS's BGO he understood: with the SQ letter, DODMERB qualification, and the presumably passing CFA, you are set to compete. IE: Get a nom, and you'll live or die by your WCS. With the option to improve it with new test scores, better CFA, etc.
