If you have a 3 year AD scholarship do you get a stipend and book money your freshman year or is it just during the 3 years you're on scholarship?

The National Scholarship will only cover the 3 years after you've contracted (Soph - Senior year). However, some schools may help with year 1 (room/board, tuition, campus-based scholie, etc). University of Idaho (one of the schools my son is looking at) offers a "bridge" scholarship that waives the non-resident portion of tuition for out of state students during the freshman year of a 3 Year AD winner.

AggieWill is correct, depends on the school. My DD is a 3 AD winner and going to University of Portland in the Fall. The school covers the freshman stipend and room and board for all four years. She also gets to use the institution grant and academic money she would of earned without the scholarship during her freshman year. It makes it much for affordable. One of the other schools she was looking at GCU, covers room and board too, but does not until contracted during sophomore year, the same with the stipend. So it is very school specific as to what they cover outside of the Army and when.

The answer to the question is you will not receive stipend and book money until you contract at the beginning of your sophomore year if you are 3AD

Both my sons attended the University of Idaho and AROTC, One graduated and commissioned 2011 and the other 2015. If you have any questions or would like some information about the school and ROTC program just let me know, I'd be happy to pass along any info. I think once you have a couple more postings you can use the PM feature on this site.

Check out the AROTC website, scroll through the schools and it will tell the extras they offer to cadets. Not sure how up to date the info is so call the school to confirm.

No, your 3 year Advance Designee scholarship will begin your sophomore year. There may be an opportunity for your school to request a .5 year upgrade but that is not promised.
