4/C Summer Cruise

Dolphin:

That was over all four years. Also included Leatherneck (a mini TBS). Think flight was in T45.

So...My soon to be Plebe will be participating in Plebe summer this year. It would be great to be able to tell him what to look forward to. What are y'all's opinion on the best options for the "summer cruise" next year?

A little bit about him, he's pretty much committed to being an aeronautical engineer. Loves hands-on putting things together and taking them apart, everything from laser pointers to building a sailing raft out of trash barrels, a rainfly, 2X4s, and lots of rope. He's outstanding with knots. One of our best friends is a Coastie Sr. Chief who also loves knots and they compete on a pretty much equal footing. I'd tell you a few more things, but I know that there are mids cruising these forums to identify plebes so that they can "greet them properly" during plebe summer. :shake:

Not trying to be Negative Ned here, but your plebe may have only marginal control over his "best options" regarding his summer cruise. Our Youngster put in for San Diego but was assigned to Norfolk. The ship never left the pier the entire 3 weeks, and he was assigned to an enlisted who was separating because his job was being eliminated. He was done with "work" by 10:30 every morning. Not exactly a great sales pitch for the SWO community.

He also put in for YPs during third block but was assigned to sailing instead. The day he purchased his sailing supplies at the Mid Store, he received an email saying that due to safety concerns, there would be no sailing after all. He was assigned to summer school to take Navigation II (instead of having to take it his Youngster year, which actually ended up being a positive thing).

His situation had absolutely nothing to do with his grades (all A's and B's) or Order of Merit (top 25% of the class). It was completely random.

Bottom line is : Semper Gumby (always be flexible) and play the hand you are dealt.

The only real option is sub vs. surface cruise. If he has the option to go sub cruise, it sounds like they trend more positive than surface cruises (which run the gamut from amazing to freaking terrible).
On a sub cruise you're guaranteed to be on a smaller boat with fewer mids (which has some benefits), whereas there's no such guarantee for a surface cruise: my friend was on an Amphib (crew of ~1000+) with 50+ other mids.
