"In order to ensure equal and fair distribution of cadetships throughout the United States, the Vice President, all 100 Senators and the 435 U.S. Representatives have nominating authority for five (5) cadetships. Each may nominate up to ten (10) people to fill each cadetship. Once a cadetship
is filled, no further nominations are permitted for that cadetship until the cadet graduates from West Point or resigns."

So does this mean that if there are already 3 people at the academy who got their representative's nomiation, 20 max nominations can be given and only 2 who got nominated from the representative can get it?

Yes.

Most MOC's staff's will keep close tabs on the number at each SA and will ensure that every year they have at least ONE nomination to give. I don't know too many that will "oops" and have nothing in a year. It's "bad form."

But remember when one of those 2 that were offered an appointment rejects one, the 9 other cadets nominated for the spot will be reevaluated and one of them will be given an appointment

But realize also that if none of the 3 already at the academy are 1st degrees (seniors), the representative probably will only nominate 10 for 1 opening because if they nominated for 2 openings, the following year they wouldn't have an opening at all (like Flieger mentioned) since they'd have the 3 original plus the 2 new ones from this year. The reps want to keep their constituents happy by being able to nominate someone every year.

At the Pentagon, every SA has an office. In that office are walls with every MOC and color coded cards so they can quickly eyeball who has what, and what digs they are charged with...yes for all of you cadets, your name is on the wall under the MOC you are charged to.

In July these offices go over and brief the MOC staff on the process and inform them how many charges they are allowed for the yr.

This is also why you won't see MOCs give out noms before the fall since they are just getting their numbers in order...remember they do lose about 5% during BCT, which means they could get more by Sept 1st.

The OP applies to the DoD service academies. The US Merchant Marine Academy does NOT accept Pres. or VP noms. However, for reasons of brevity here, know that the USMMA does have some latitude with the Congressional noms.

Can you provide a little more information on the MOC nominations for USMMA? There are 535 MOCs but a class size is only around 300.

Please call the USMMA Admissions office direct. They are MUCH better at explaining this. 516-773-5391. Also know that the USCGA is exempt from the nomination requirement. Hope this helps.
