Hi! I just had a few questions on the application for AIM.
When it says if we are fluent in another language, should I count Spanish? I've been taking honors classes for 3 years and am planning on taking AP next year, but I'm not sure if that qualifies as fluent.
Also, where it asks about piercings, tattoos, etc.: I have just 2 piercings, one in each earlobe. Should I mention that? Thanks!

    Aly,

The way I see it, you're fluent in a language if you can hold a descent conversation, by written AND verbal communication, with someone who's primary language is whatever language you're learning; in your case, Spanish. If you can write and speak to someone who primarily speaks Spanish and do so cogently, then you are fluent. I've taken 3 years of Spanish two, one of them honors, but I wouldn't consider myself fluent because I can't speak Spanish well, I can only write and read it well.

As for the piercings, I would include those. Just state that you have one piercing on each ear. I believe that the USCGA just wants to make sure you fit standards, which you do, so they don't waste a spot on someone who can't join the military to begin with.

    Good luck! :)

Fluent means you would be able to carry a conversation with a native speaker with no issues. If you can do that, sure. But if it takes you five minutes to come up with the correct conjugation for an -ar verb in the imperfect tense then I would say no, señorita.

As for piercings, yes. Piercings qualify as piercings. The CGA doesn't look too kindly on deceptive answers.
